In the year 1985 and I had just joined the army. I was only 15 at this time and was wanting to serve my country even if it meant i'd never see my family again. For 17 years I lived and served and in the year 2000 I married the love of my life Helen Salenko. This was very difficult because you couldn’t be sure of where the skin of the snake ended, but we somehow managed to get the snake off without cutting his arm which is a miracle. We decided that throwing away the snake was a waste of food so we kept it until the next night for dinner instead of the gross MRE food packages. We couldn’t cook the snake because if we started a fire we would have given up our position so we cleaned it in the stream and ate it raw, this wasn't a good idea because some of our men got spirometra and unfortunately about 3 died. Later that day we went to a huge oak tree by the steam and gave the men a proper burial and sent word to their

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

I have experienced many stressful situations recently my organization, however none have compared to stress I experiences leading up to my deployment to Iraq. When I joined the Oregon National Guard, I was told to never go to the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (41 IBCT), made up of two Infantry Battalions, a Calvary Battalion, a Field Artillery Battalion, Support Battalion and the Headquarters. I was also told that I should especially never want to work in 2nd Battalion of the 162nd Infantry (2-162 IN BN), which was the strongest of the two Infantry elements in the brigade. After working in the state Joint Force Headquarters for eight years, because no other person in my career field would take the position, I was asked to take one for the team, and join 2-162 IN BN, as their Senior Human Resources Noncommissioned Officer. Two years leading up to the deployment I was continually tested, and these experience have ultimately made me a stronger leader.…

When I began working for the Veteran’s Administration as a personal care attendant for veterans that are wheelchair bound I had no idea how profoundly one veteran would affect me. This veteran, whom I will refer to as D-man, would become part of my life for 3 years. This is the first experience that I would have with a totally dependent quadriplegic.
