Growing up as a Vietnamese boy in Tulsa, Oklahoma was difficult. My parents had been recently divorced shortly beefore we made the move from San Jose, California to my current home. My father wanted nothing to do witeh us, so my mother, sister, and I moved to Broken Arrow when I was six years old. My Mom chose to move to Broken Arrow because she had some friends who had also moved here from California a few years before us. She heard of their successes and happiness in this new town, and sehe hoped that we would find the same prosperity. Starting in the first grade, I had always had trouble fitting in at school. Kids would start to pick on me and call me names such as “Ching Chong” and “Yiliang Peng”. At recess, I wouldn’t play with anyone. I preferred to sit on the grass and relax. The other ekids wouldn’t invite me to play or even acknowledge my existence. But one day something different happened. In the fourth grade, one of my classmates invited me to play basketball with him and his friends. I reluctantly said yes, deciding to give it a chance. Baesketball had always looked fun to me, but I had no friends to play with. As soon as the game had started, I had realized my mistake. Instead of passing the ball to me, my classmate who invited me to play threw the ball direectly towards my face. I fell down immediately. I opened my eyes to the sight of his husky figure towering over my body. He said, “Did you really think we wanted to play with you? What a loser!” He was clearly proud of his premeditated assault as he coolly strolled away snickering. “A handful of moments I wished I could change, but I was carried away,” are the lyrics that remind a lot about myself. Growing up, and even about two years ago, I was insanely shy and did not talk much around people, friends, or family. The way I talked to people was in a timid, soft spoken way, which looking back, was awfully embarrassing. My friends and family would laugh at me because I could not talk well, and when I did talk, they acted as if I were a baby who just said its first words. With all of that nonsense going on, their idiotic response kind of made me not want to say anything anymore.…

It’s funny. I don’t remember the day you were born, or the day you came home from the hospital; but I do not remember a time or event in my life in which you and I were apart. You have always been there; like an annoying rashes we earned from playing outside in the sugar cane fields of Louisiana, you were always there. Every minute spent outside, playing video games, every jump shot taken, and every fist fight with the neighborhood bullies I was involved my right hand man, you. We were inseparable; if someone saw one of us, they saw both of us, as if we were adjoined at the hip and were given one name, “Daniel and Jason.” It was always “Has anybody seen….”, or “We can’t start until Daniel and Jason gets here.…
