Personal Narrative: The Dance Team

Improved Essays
All four years of high school I have been on the dance team. I have played on other sports teams as well but they all have one similarity;every team has a coach. To dance my passion and my teammates are my family, but sometimes coaches are cruel.
Sometimes coaches pick favorites. They choose who earns a spot in the front row by who goes to their studio, or whose parents volunteer the most. Not based off of who deserves the spotlight, only who they like. I know all sports have this problem (let's face it, every team has a “coach's pet”) but why? Why should the girl who works the hardest be hidden in the back,or play the least? Especially when she is just as good, if not better, than the girl in the front? Why does playing time get determined by how long a parent has known the coach; why does her daughter get to be front and center? ? It is not fair, and it needs to be changed.

The dancers who get cut from a routine usually cannot do the skills or tricks that are required to compete that certain routine. At least that is what they tell us. In my case however, I could do all of the tricks. Tryouts could not have gone any better, I nailed that routine every single time we performed it earlier that year. So why was I cut? They chose me so to satisfy her mom who does all the work; they chose me so that their favorite could perform. I got replaced with a girl who did not try to master her tricks at all, or work to perfect the routine. This girl just so happens to go to the studio of the assistant coach, and this girl's mom just happens to plan all of our fundraising events and complete all of the team's financial paperwork. What a coincidence! Of course she gets to compete even though she cannot do any of the skills, she is the favorite. Once again, how is that fair? I worked outside of practice to perfect every single skill, I put in all of my effort yet I get punished. Favoritism is

Quitting the sport I loved had made me realize that I need to start setting more goals for myself. Before my injury, my goals were mostly just about gymnastics. Now I have to set different goals in real life, which is for the better since I cannot do gymnastics forever. As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” (Michael Jordan). Teams consist of multiple roles including leaders, starters, and supporters who all contribute and are vital to the success of the team. Athletes who are willing to put in extra time and effort earn main roles on the team. Meanwhile, positive teammates who may not be as athletically gifted or old enough to play in a starring position, make the team to fulfill a supporting role throughout the season. The starters, main players, supporters, and even bench warmers are important to the success of the team.…

I am contacting you regarding the Walled Lake Central Women’s varsity basketball team. Three years ago when Robert Schopf was put in the position as head coach, the program decided to give him another chance even though he was terminated in the past. His inappropriate actions have not only appeared during the regular season, but also during summer league. During one summer he made unnecessary comments, some exemplifying prejudice, towards his players. For example, he told Peyton Brikho to stop her “Chaldean attitude” before putting her into the game.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

erybody deserves to be on the team as much as the others do. It makes the person who is not getting as much playing time feel bad because they are not as good as the other players. There most definitely should be equal playing time by each player. Discriminating against people who are on their first year of playing is not right. Even if you played for ten years or you're just starting there should be equal amounts for both people to play.…

Challenges: One challenge that I had to face in the last few weeks was a gymnast ran full speed into a balance beam and hit the front of his head. Understandably, he was in tears and complained of a headache. There were no instructors immediately around so I had to handle the situation on my own. After a few minutes, I was able to calm him down and ask him a few questions. He answered all my questions in a timely manner, and didn’t show signs of a concussion.…

I stroll down the hallway and hear the sounds of muffled music booming from the speakers. The music seems to intensify becoming louder and louder, the closer I walk towards the doors. I open the wooden double doors and walk into the space. I see white walls that hold vertical paneled mirrors, side by side, enclosed with black steel bars horizontally sitting three feet off the ground. As I looked down at the floor, it is covered with gray marley flooring scratched and worn, from years of wear and tear.…

It was early on a Saturday morning; the sun had just risen into the atmosphere where it crept into the littlest openings of my worthless binds. The weather was moderate with the temperature ranging from the high sixties to the low seventies. I could smell the damp earth covered in mowed grass mixed with the fallen leaves of the White Oak that embodied the start of fall. The weather was perfect for tennis. But in my mind I felt a nuisance, a bothersome, due to the current deficiency of my restfulness.…

The final exam for modern 1 this semester allowed me to look at myself in a different light. Throughout the semester I have been working on memorizing choreography for myself rather than relying my peers to memorize the choreography for me. This combination allowed for me to strengthen this specific semester goal, while also allowing me to perform this piece as a solo. This paper will focus on what I saw in myself during the video exam. It will also reflect on how I was feeling while performing this piece of choreography.…
