Personal Narrative: The Color War

Camp is one of the most important things in my life. About six years ago I was sitting on the side of the baseball field at night watching the rope burning. It all came down to the freshman’s rope whoever burned it first would win the color war. Fights, blood, sweat, and tears are the only things that describe this color war. The Rope dropped the gray team rushed the baseball field surrounding the burner he was a legend he had defied all expectations. In my mind I knew I was going to be that guy and win. Fast-forward about six years, it the end of red and gray everyone was doubting me. Every few years the final rope will come down to freshman, this was that special year. My teams senior and juniors burn their ropes our sophomore lost. It all

During Michigan winters I look forward to February, because it’s filled with celebration of my culture. Black History Month evokes a strong sense of pride. However, since entering high school every February has been a greater disappointment than the last as Black History Month was nothing more than a fleeting thought and a tokenized moment. Feburary of my junior year began without a single poster, announcement, or even small speech. So, I decided to lead a project to bring recognition.…

I’ve always seen myself as a realist. I try to plainly say things as I see them with as little bias as possible. Alongside that I have also given my best effort to try and see things from other perspectives. There is always another way to look at life and all of its bits and pieces and I love challenging myself to do so. Frankly however, it is far from easy.…

The only thing in the world that’s constant is war. It was an aphorism murmured in the sticky summer of 1864 as the Civil War tore America apart—and it was a truth that had only become more evident in my more than twenty years as a vampire. Every time I picked up the paper, there were stories of humans fighting humans: brawls on the streets of San Francisco, uprisings in India, insurrections all over Europe. And once blood had been shed and graves marked, they’d start all over again.…

In my understanding, that was my command to do. Give selfish treatment to one man but give all credible treatment to the other, who in all shed the same blood fighting. I became deeply distraught by this segregated treatment because of some set value one man has to have just by the color of his skin. In disgust, I still had to do what was meant for me to do. I would work on the black soldiers and a woman named Clara Barton would work on the white soldiers. I grew interest into wanting to know how she felt about this unfair situation, however it was prohibited to step near her or inside the white soldier’s tent.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…
