Personal Narrative: The City Of Pittsburgh

Improved Essays
Pittsburgh is not my hometown of 2,587 people. Pitt is not my high school of 1,243 students.
The Pitt Class of 2021 will certainly not be my high school graduating class of 323 students. Everything about Pitt is new for me, entirely out of my comfort zone, and that is how I know that Pitt is the right choice for me.
Growing up in the safe suburbs of Central New Jersey, life became a routine. Every day wake up, go to the same place with the same people, follow the same schedule, rinse and repeat. In this routine I felt safe. I found comfort in what I knew, and that was small town life. However, following my first visit to Pitt, a longing for something different than what I’ve known for seventeen years sprouted in me.

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

Twenty-two years ago, I was lucky enough to call Pittsboro, North Carolina my home for the first time. Unbeknownst to me, this small rural town would play such an enormous role in who I am today. From a first kiss to pig pickings, Pittsboro was full of life and opportunities. My family, farming, and the culture here consequently affected how I view the world today. Though I may not get to spend as much time in Pittsboro, my roots will always be in this town.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

From the balcony that was located at the top of my towering apartment building, it felt as if the entire busy and animated city could be seen. The beaming lights along with the streets that were always astir made it impossible to take my eyes away as I latched on tighter to the frosty railing. A smile played at my lips; this lavish city was now my own. Ever since I was a child I had dreams of moving to Philly.…

Nevada, Tennessee, New York or maybe even Wyoming, where can you honestly call home? This is not the place you went to school in or every town you moved to, but the place where you really grew up in, the place you call home. The place that really formed who you are, makes up your personality, the way you talk or even how you do things traditionally. Is that the country or city maybe even an orphanage? Worland, Wyoming, made me into the person I am today because of living in the country, the type of school I went to and the way my family raised me.…

Everyone has their ideal travel destination. They all want to be handed a small, golden ticket that can take them anywhere their heart desires: New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo. My destination, however, is a bit harder to get to. My golden ticket, fitting comfortably in the palm of my hand, not only takes me where I want to go but when I want to go. On the face of the ticket, in small ink-black letters, the name of the destination is etched across the paper.…
