Personal Narrative: The Children's Inn At NIH Thoughtful Treasures

Improved Essays
I’ve always expressed myself through my art, whether it was through drawing, painting, or ceramics, and I always challenge myself to try new projects. The summer before sophomore year, I was scrolling through Pinterest for new ideas and stumbled upon pattern templates for friendship bracelets. Excited by this idea, I rushed out to buy supplies, and for the rest of the summer, I always had string in hand. By the end of the summer, I made more than I could ever wear alone and I was struck with an idea - donating my bracelets! I did research and discovered The Children’s Inn at NIH Thoughtful Treasures Program, in which it small gifts are given to children with life-threatening Illnesses staying at the hospital. The minimum donation requirement

‘I don’t want this,’ I said. ‘I want a better one – one that you’ve put some thought and effort into. I have a special box, where I keep all my cards from you and Sophia, and this one can’t go in there’” (Chua 111). With this experience, she was teaching her children that in order to be successful, as well as making something special for someone, you must put time and effort into it.…

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

If someone were to see Judson Bliss, the Director of Homeless Programs at St. Patrick Center in downtown St. Louis, at work, they might notice the water bottle he often carries around with him. Wrapped around Bliss’ water bottle is a simple bracelet that conveys much deeper meaning about the work that he does, and a large-scale issue in American society: homelessness. The bracelet Bliss’ son, an Affton High School student, gave to him, was a fundraising bracelet for the son’s math teacher whose child was afflicted by a form of cancer. The fundraiser was created by a homeless student. Yes, a homeless student.…

Every day there are thousands of men and women serving our country in the armed services. They are someone’s brother, sister, father, mother, aunt, uncle, son or daughter. They spend many months and sometimes years in a foreign country far away from the comforts of their home, some without family or friends to thank them for the sacrifices they make daily. Since the age of four when I saw the cover of Time Magazine featuring wounded soldiers, I have desired to do something to say “thank you” to the troops for their service and show my appreciation for them. Living in Maryland, so close to Washington DC, you would think there would be a lots of opportunities to thank our troops.…

I remember going to the Greater Allan Cathedral when I was a younger teen. I started going there with my family every Sunday to the churches 8:30 a.m. service. Or, if we woke up early enough, the 6:15 a.m. My Father made sure we went to church every Sunday. He cut our hair every Saturday morning so we were sharp, and ready to receive the word from Pastor Floyd H. Flake and his wife, Elaine Flake.…

March 29, 2009 was the day when I first stepped in the Islands of Hawaii. While looking around the airport, there was one thing in my mind. “Is Hawaii really a paradise?” Throughout my stay here, I discovered the answer to this question. While going towards our gate number, I saw hula dancers dancing passionately, and giving happiness to passengers who see them.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

t 's been a few years since I 've been to Clementon, so having the day off last Wednesday I took a ride up to see the town. In the 1970s I lived in an apartment on Blackwood-Clementon Road in Lindenwold and had a friend who lived on top of the Park Grill. The town had a distinct look, with its older buildings, pool hall, and feed store – something you don 't usually see at the mall. Most of my time there was spent drinking beer in the Park Grill or drinking beer and eating seafood at the Palm Garden, so my memory may be fuzzy On the way up there on the White Horse Pike from Absecon, I passed Philadelphia Avenue in Egg Harbor City, lined with old-time storefronts and homes; then cut over to Bellevue Avenue in Hammonton with its historic district of restored homes and commercial buildings; then on the Pike again through Berlin 's quaint downtown.…

This program is a group of elderly women within the local refugee and immigrant community who meet weekly to create knitting projects and socialize. Elders are very independent back in their home country, so it is different to be the U.S. and have to be completely dependent on their children. Some help raise and provide care for their grandchildren and great-children. Many do not speak English, or know their rights and the opportunities for them. They have organized field trips, like attending an International Women’s Day event, that was very successful, but lack the regular transportation needed.…

Its kind of hard to imagine a place pure and free of teenage issues and dramas. I never thought I would be able to escape my problems in the real world. I never thought I would be able to let go. But know as I sit on this rock, staring at the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen, feeling the wind blow my hair back, and smelling the wonderful scent of nature, I know I've escaped. I have finally found a place where I can let go of all my worries and all my stress.…

My grandma’s house was always a place filled of mirth, jollity, and most importantly unconditional love. I remember racing up those steep, wooden stairs to the plain bungalow that awaited up top, thrilled to greet the multitude of family inside who were just as enthusiastic to do the same. My grandma, or what we preferred to call her, Nannie, always stitched our family closer and closer together as the years went by. Many would think that having twelve children who then grew up to have youngsters of their own would cause such a sizable family to end up dispersing and going off to do their own things, but Nannie would never let that be. According to my many aunts and uncles, Nannie’s one wish was, “for this family to be united as one.”…

Often a small event can shape a life. Identify an event in your life – something that an outsider might consider insignificant – that had an unexpected impact on you. While this is indeed true, my experience has been that a life’s path is equally influenced by small events.…

The second step of our project gave those students the chance to help; the students decorated covers that go over the chemotherapy bags and small pillowcases that are used by the hospital to have the patient 's rest their arms on while getting an IV. Along with the gifts that the fifth graders at Smith Elementary made we also had NJHS members from the district make fleece tie blankets. While these students were decorating and creating these products we took videos of the students giving a positive message that would be shown to the patients to let them know that they are not alone. Finally we planned a party for those patients in the hospital where we delivered the creations of the fifth graders and…
