Personal Narrative: The Chartres Cathedral

I have always been a fanatic of fantasy stories, however, I was skeptical with what I found during my expedition in my former grandmother’s house, who now rests in peace. Between my grandmother’s belongings that have been dusting for years in the attic, there was a white plain envelope sealed with my name written in a messy handwriting that I recognized as my grandmother’s. I looked at it for what it seemed like a whole minute wondering about if I should open it. At the end, I opted for opening at that moment. Inside of the envelope, there was what it looked like an old ticket made from processed animal skin, also known as parchment, and a black ink feather pen. In a stunning calligraphy made with what I believe was the same ink feather pen, it was written “Destination and …show more content…
Although I had never been there, I recognized that interior design and for the second time in that day I was skeptical. I was actually inside of my favorite Gothic architectural structure. The Chartres Cathedral was partly built in ca. 1145 and was finished in ca. 1155. Reason why I chose the latter year was because I wanted to see that magnificent structure already finished. Thanks God that it was still day time when I arrived there, since I could explore it. I finally saw those rib vaults, flying buttresses, pinnacles, and stained glass windows that I dream of designing one day when I earn a bachelor’s degree in environmental design architecture. Even though I had fun observing every detail of the Royal Portal in the west façade of the cathedral, nothing is forever, and so my traveling ended when the sunset started. I do not know where my grandmother had obtained that mysterious ticket from, however, I was glad that she had saved it to me. Since, thanks to that, I was able to travel to the past to see with my own eyes that marvelous Gothic edification that had always fascinated me since I was a

No matter where you look in today’s cities, towns, and communities, one can see similarities of the architecture to those of ancient times. Many of today’s building all across the country have similarities to buildings of the ancient world and does not just appear in the realm of religious institutions, banks, or government buildings. Buildings at Colleges, insurance companies, banquet halls, auditoriums, palaces, temples, castles, monasteries, and even convention centers for example are designed and built to resemble and lay tribute to structures of the past. When looking at the European Middle Ages, it may be easy to assume it was a “dark” time, due to the many horrors the time period endured. However, this is not enough to label the entire period as the “Dark Ages.” The Middle Ages were more light than dark, because it was a period of religious dedication, intellectual breakthrough, and scientific advancement. While religion has appeared important in almost every culture of every time period, it was very prominent in the Middle Ages. God was viewed even more holy than He is today, not even being spoken of by any earthly name.…

Marvin Trachtenberg, “Suger’s Miracles, Branner’s Bourges: Reflections on “Gothic Architecture” as Medieval Modernism”, Gesta, 39.2 (2000)m 183-205. In his article, Marvin Trachtenberg aims to redefine our understanding of words like “modern” and “historicism” in regards to Gothic architecture. To prove his point, he uses Suger’s St. Denis along with Bourges Cathedral as examples, but he begins with a lengthy investigation into the language we use to describe Gothic architecture, including the word itself. Trachtenberg proposes the elimination of the “Gothic architecture,” as a label and instead adopting the term “medieval modernism” to describe the architecture we see from the time period.…

We had this amazing spot that had a bridge that we made and everything. We were bringing further supplies to add on to the spot and make it look more visually appealing. When I wake, I go from darkness to the sunshine erupting in my eyes. I feel the need to get up but my body is working slower than my mind this morning. As I manage to lift myself up from my bed, I quickly remember that today is the day Papa leaves for his yearly hunting trip. Leaping to my feet, I dash to make sure he hasn't left yet. I slowly come to a stop when I see him fast asleep on the floor with an empty bottle of liquor placed in his hand.…

I remember going to the Greater Allan Cathedral when I was a younger teen. I started going there with my family every Sunday to the churches 8:30 a.m. service. Or, if we woke up early enough, the 6:15 a.m. My Father made sure we went to church every Sunday. He cut our hair every Saturday morning so we were sharp, and ready to receive the word from Pastor Floyd H. Flake and his wife, Elaine Flake.…

t 's been a few years since I 've been to Clementon, so having the day off last Wednesday I took a ride up to see the town. In the 1970s I lived in an apartment on Blackwood-Clementon Road in Lindenwold and had a friend who lived on top of the Park Grill. The town had a distinct look, with its older buildings, pool hall, and feed store – something you don 't usually see at the mall. Most of my time there was spent drinking beer in the Park Grill or drinking beer and eating seafood at the Palm Garden, so my memory may be fuzzy On the way up there on the White Horse Pike from Absecon, I passed Philadelphia Avenue in Egg Harbor City, lined with old-time storefronts and homes; then cut over to Bellevue Avenue in Hammonton with its historic district of restored homes and commercial buildings; then on the Pike again through Berlin 's quaint downtown.…

According to the tradition the Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Chartres has housed the tunic of the Blessed Virgin since 876. The Chartres communicates a message through the imagery of good and bad found throughout the church. Some symbolism found in the Cathedral are the light-stained glass; this makes you look toward the “light” and away from the “darkness”, it also allowed the church to be light-filled with colors which makes an breathtaking experience while standing in this large church. The vertical standing Cathedral makes people look up in the sky, which symbolizes looking up at God and divinity. Similarly, the Basilica allowed you to walk in and be in a “new world” from its vast spaces.…

In the text “Why Architecture Matters” Paul Goldberger, shows that not only the outer boundary or façade is important but that there is another dimension which is often open to wider interpretation and often disregarded when thinking about a building. This being the interior space within these boundaries, the interior of the building says a lot more than its exterior, as it defines the space, the light and the mood it creates.…

After two lessons of learning, I have benefited much from them. I enjoyed the stories of Cathedral and Hills like White Elephant. The narrative structures of these two stories are very different, but they all have one thing in common, which is their fascinating ways of expression to create conflicts and tensions. In the masterpiece of Cathedral by Raymond Carver, the narrative style along with the well constructed architect of the story and theme combines together to form an excellent story. Cathedral has a first person narrative style, the first person narrator tells the story in fragments of sentences, often short and simple, like “This blind man, an old friend of my wife 's, he was on his way to spend the night.…
