Personal Narrative: The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue

The butterfly effect states that small events can have huge outcomes. One event in my life has made this very evident to me. One afternoon, while in my home, I heard a thud. I stepped outside, onto my deck to find a cardinal laying there, stunned, under the window. It was clear what had happened. She had been attracted to the yard by my bird feeders, and had flown into the window, not realizing it was glass. This was the first time I had experienced this situation. I called a number of animal rescues in North Carolina and the only one to call back was The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue (CWR). The cardinal ended up only being stunned and she flew away before I could bring her into the rescue. I realized then, how few rescues are willing to take birds, especially songbirds. It would take volumes to write about all of them. One of the best parts of the rescue, in my opinion, is that not only do the volunteers help the animals, but the animals help the volunteers. I have talked to so many people about how their views of animals have changed. People have changed their diets to exclude animal products or have stopped buying products tested on animals, and many have told me that, after coming to the rescue, they realized that each animal has its own personality. There are volunteers who are experiencing hardships and use the volunteer experience to help them through the week. These people are dedicating their lives, or part of their free time, to give back, and help birds and other animals in need. Most of the animals, have also come from bad situations, and they are some of the most inspiring beings I have met. One of which is Clarence the goose. Clarence, a domestic goose, came to CWR after living in a house with an elderly woman and then dumped at a park by her family and shot with a BB gun.
