Shaking The Captain’s Hand
It was the middle of June, and I had just taken my CDA (Child Development Associates) exam. This exam was so important to me because it meant moving up to a higher position on my job as childcare professional. I had to work the next day, so I did not have time to even think about the test results. I was called to the office to speak with my childcare trainer. I thought she had observed me doing something wrong in the classroom, because that is usually the case when you are called to the training office. When I got there, she hugged me and said “Congratulations you passed your exam yesterday and your CDA certificate will be in the mail”. I was so happy, until she said “By the way, the captain of the entire naval base would like to meet and honor you and other who have received your CDA’s”. This automatically made me panic. I thought of everything that could go wrong at this ceremony. For example choking on my words when the captain speaks to me, falling down when I walk across the stage in front of everyone, and just making a fool out of myself. I have worked for the Navy as a childcare provider

Our names were called in alphabetical order. When he got to the names starting with T, I started talking to myself. I checked my clothing and high heels to make sure everything was flawless. Out of nowhere I got this burst of confidence and swagger. Then my name was called Chinyere Townsend. I stood up and strutted, with my heels clanking on a beat in my head as if I was walking a run way. Still thinking do not fall girl! Then I graced the stage, I heard cheers, screams, and clapping. I walked across, shook the Capitan’s hand, as he said "Good job”. Just like that it was over. We fellowshipped and dined with one another. We won prizes and took home many different trinkets. It was an end to a most nerve racking and at the same time beautiful

We all lined up just like we practiced. As we started walking through the corridors, I remembered all the good times and the bad I had there. We got to the last door, before getting onto the track field, and you could hear the faint sound of the graduation theme song. As soon as the doors opened there was a huge a huge uproar from the crowd. Family and friends were all gathered there to support my classmates and I. we lined up in rows of fours and we walked seventy-five percent of the track towards our seats.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I silently creep across the dock, the spruce planks creaking under my old, well-worn boots. The waves crash violently against the rusty metal poles supporting the structure of the dock. The wind vigorously rattles the harbor. Despite the horror inside me, I continue to walk unconfidently down the dock.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

When I was younger, there was never a dull moment down the block on the street where my best friend Sylvester lived, better known as “Captain Sly”. There were two factions on the block that constantly battled for control of our meager living space. The Pirates, us, and the Knights, them. The Pirates consisted of Sly and I, as well as our friends Mason and Oliver. On the other hand, the Knights were composed of Sly’s little brother Loki, a kid named Jimmy, his little brother Sylas, and Cameron from Wales.…

I was taken to a hospital next to a local train station; the hospital was dark, gloomy, and had a prominent stench of death.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…
