Personal Narrative: The Canyon Blaster

Improved Essays
I have never really liked roller coasters. Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that life is very much like one. My first big scary time I rode a roller coaster, I was thirteen years old and I was anxiously excited. I lacked the precaution to give my phone to my grandma before boarding which was a silly mistake, especially considering the giant roller coaster in question is called “The Canyon Blaster,” a monstrous structure, as the name indicates, it loops up, down and upside-down and goes really fast like a canyon. I am calm while boarding, nervously, and as the tangle of gears beneath us clicks and groans. I undergo the gradually increasing angle of the track in silence. My sister, whos 2 years younger than me, knows what’s coming, and I catch her mumbling jokes under her breath before we’re at the very top with the entire amusement park spread below our feet. As the vertical drop below us, scares the heck out of my little sister and to be honest it scares me too, all pink metal curving sharply down and away, my stomach starts crumpling uncomfortably. I want to scream, but my mental capacity is focused on preventing my phone from slipping out my pocket using utter willpower. My sister has no such concentration. Her death scream competes with the loud …show more content…
It has taught me that even though things may get tough and kind of crazy it will have its ups, and those ups may be a very high point, like a roller coaster. Another example is, someone close to you can pass away and that's a downer, but think about it later in life or recent something good is going to happen. For example, going to college or having a family of your own, yes those down points are heartbreaking and sad but those high points are exciting and

A few years ago, on a class trip, my friends had asked me to ride at least one roller coaster. It was not a large roller coaster, but it made me queasy just looking at it. I was confident that I would be able to go on and enjoy the experience. My confidence quickly evaporated when we began climbing up the roller coaster’s first hill. The ride dropped, and I was screaming so loudly that I could only hear myself.…

I remember the gut wrenching feeling in my stomach as my best friend and I approached the tallest and fastest roller coaster at Hershey Park, called SkyRush. I am not sure why I agreed to go on this roller coaster, considering most of the time at amusement parks I entertain myself with food, and miniature rides that stay level to the ground. Unlike me, my friend liked the rush and heart dropping feeling of being at the apex of a roller coaster and then dropping down at maximum speed. Personally, I preferred the ground, where I remained in full control of my own safety. Yet that afternoon I found myself standing in line for SkyRush.…

Well I had gone to Six Flags and when I had got there I was so anxious to get on every ride in Six Flags but then I had heard a person on the Goliath scream ”stop the ride” it was so funny and scary at the same time. Then I saw that almost every ride had so many twists and turns and even circles that go round and round. Last year I had gone on a roller coaster which was the Mind Bender and it wasn’t so scary. The Mind Bender had so many circles that go round and round.…

In just a few seconds they would be off, gone to travel over the track in a bright blur. The screams enclosed the car with the force of adrenaline as it appeared and disappeared in a flash. I heard the happy and terrified screams of the people on the coaster and the booming voice of the ones controlling it while strolling around Paradise Pier in Disneyland with my family. At this point, I hadn't been on the roller coaster yet. I preferred to keep myself on the ground and not on the coaster going up side down into crazy drops.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

Then the third gate was the worst, who could hear people screaming their heads off, and feel the ground shake like there was an earthquake, and it was our turn next!!! I was TERRIFIED, Claire had fingernail marks in her arm, and as our cart emptied of the people before us, I got light headed, I vaguely remember getting in and buckled. I started to take deep breaths I was starting to feel better when I felt how secure the harnesses were. But then we started to move, at first it was okay, slow and easy going around the first corner, but then I saw the unbelievable hill that was 170 ft tall, this ride brakes 7 different records in the world and one is it’s got the longest drop for a wing coaster!!! Slowly climbing to the top, felt longer than the car ride!…

I had always feared roller coasters as a young kid. I was scared of the astounding heights that some of them reach and their rapid acceleration. I was intimidated from the horrifying screams of terror from other kids on roller coasters, their high-pitched squeals of absolute terror and adrenaline rushing through their small bodies. For me that was very scary and made me not want to get near one of those monstrous horrifying contraptions. This all changed one day when my parents forced me to go to Six Flags with the rest of my family.…

“Another appeal is that roller coasters, in simulating true danger, provide the illusion of mastering a great peril. It is a deeply satisfying feeling in which mock danger provides the exhilaration of self-affirmation.” says Daniel Goleman with New York Times. This quote shows that putting ourselves through this life threatening experience and enjoying it after it’s all over can be seen as a great triumph. This is one of the many things that bring us enjoyable fear, some love the thrill that is caused by roller coasters, but for others, the amount of fear is too massive to enjoy an amusement park…

However, just as I said this the spiritless roller coaster attendant strapped me in permanently ensuring I couldn’t back out. After the attendants strapped everyone in, they did their whole spiel on how we were going to have a great time, but the words muddled in my mind as I was more focused on breathing. The car moved onward and screeched at us as if in warning. Then suddenly the car stopped, I’m pretty sure just to spite us.…
