Personal Narrative: The Brooklyn Bridge

“Can you believe we actually made it?’’ That’s what I asked my sister when we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge in our car. The lights, the people, the buildings, all so intriguing. We even saw the Statue of Liberty our first 5 minutes in the city. I couldn't help but to stick my head out of the window and breathe in that New York air, which was not a very good idea because there was trash a couple feet away from the car. It was at this moment I realized, “This is exactly where I need to be”. Once we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, my dad’s phone lost connection and so the GPS paused, he didn't notice until we were all the way in Chinatown, that's when I said “Dad you’re supposed to make a left right here’’, he didn’t listen and kept going straight. The first night we got there, my father drove into the parking lot in the hotel we were going to be staying in. We grabbed all of our belongings out of the …show more content…

My ears perked up when I heard Barbra Streisand on the TV and I got up swiftly and my heart started racing and palms sweating because it finally kicked in, ‘’I am in New York City!” I ran to the window and was completely appalled there were people walking very swiftly not even worried about the traffic, even the birds weren’t phased by the city. I saw one bird walking across the street and a little kid reach down and pet the bird and I was so confused. Being the person I am with all that adrenaline pumping through me, I opened the window six stories high and yelled, ‘’Hello New York!’’. That’s when my sister woke up for a quick second and yelled ‘’Shut the heck up!’’ Any other time I would argue with her, but not today, we were in the city of

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Slowly and much to my surprise, things started to get better. By day six, I was an expert on navigating through the city. Each day on my walk back to Penn Station, I would take a new route, marveling at New York City’s array of tourists and commuters. The streets were unusually quiet as I made my way from the 10th floor of the children's hospital to the McDonalds' on 31st Street. It was already 11 at night and I had to decide if I wanted to take the subway or pay the high fee for a taxi ride all the way from New York City to Hoboken, New Jersey. I ordered a Big Mac and a large fry to take home as my dinner and decided a taxi was the best way to travel for tonight. I lugged all of my sheet music into the backseat of the taxi with me and watched the bright lights disappear as I gobbled down my fast food meal. Nights like these make me remember my father the way he was before Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome took over his body and mind.…

I finally saw the the beautiful sun for the first time without having to bend my head back as far as I could since I had been in New York. It shone down brightly, warming my skin and glimmering off the glass of the skyscrapers in the near distance. I could finally feel the soft breeze wrap around me and not get deflected from the buildings. I watched the people from the city enter the park and watched as their city attitudes give way to the magical ambiance of the park.
