Improved Essays
Last summer was one of the best summers I’ve ever had. The Blome’s always go to Texas. My family on the other hand had never been there before. The Blome family has a condo down in Rockport, which is where they always stay. Our family wasn’t going to the same place. We were going to be six hours away from them in a totally different area; then my mom got a text from Janay saying that we could stay with them in Rockport if we wanted to. When my parents asked my brother and I if that would be okay with us we told them that was a stupid question and that we obviously wanted to go stay with the Blome’s. I told my mom that I wanted to keep the whole thing a secret from Kennedy and Carter so they wouldn’t know that we were coming. Being born into a Jewish family in Mexico, religion was constantly present through my childhood. I went to a Kosher, Jewish school from Pre-K to second grade, where Hebrew and Jewish history were as an integral part of school as math and science. Although my family is not orthodox, we did celebrate all of the Jewish holidays from Hanukkah to Tish’a B’Av. It was only when me, my parents, and my sister moved to Florida, that I left the tight knit Jewish community that I had been a part of for my entire life. I began attending an irreligious school where I was no longer surrounded by people like me; on the contrary, I was one of only few Jewish kids in my classes.…

Since the summer of 2015, we have visited an amazing group of educators, ministers, and everyday volunteers who work to bring refugees out of poverty and integrate them into the American lifestyle through faith. While I was there, I got to reach out to kids ages 2-17 years old that came from a variety of different countries.
