You could feel the tension in the air as everyone prepared for the long day ahead of them. A few weeks back a group of us gathered together and organized a walkout to show our support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Similar protests have occurred across the nation after the grand jury's decision to not prosecute the officers responsible for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. He was right, we organized this and we won't spark any attention to the matter if we remain on the sidewalk. As I walked to the front I told everyone to get ready to move onto the street. Our group huddled together and started walking towards traffic. Everyone followed along and that's when I realized how willing and eager everyone was to be apart of something greater than themselves. We started to chant things like, “Hands up, don't shoot!” and “No justice, no peace, no racist police!”. We even started to chant in spanish saying things like, “!El pueblo, unido, jamás sera vencido!” which translates to, “The people, united, will never be defeated!”.
