Decent Essays
On the first day of my college freshman Spanish course, I realized I was the only student who was neither a native speaker nor had I years of Spanish classes behind me. I had never studied Spanish - or any foreign language - and four foreign language semesters is required for my degree. It was the first day of class, and I already felt hopelessly behind. I asked my professor’s advice about what is the best way to learn Spanish. Following her advice, I drilled vocabulary flashcards and verb charts into my head everyday. I listened to vocabulary recordings and Spanish radio as I completed errands. I asked my Spanish-speaking friends hold conversations with me in my broken Spanish. Some of my classmates agreed form a study group with me, and I

This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

Throughout the school year, I would play Duolingo for around 20 minutes each day to brush up on vocabulary and conjugations. This has definitely helped raise my confidence as I entered my junior year. Unlike some of my classmates who forgot a lot of the earlier topics in Spanish, like objects and tenses, I have been preparing all summer. This made my transition from Spanish 4 Honors in to AP Spanish relatively easy. Towards the end of last year, as I picked my courses for this year (my senior year), I realized that I didn’t have room to take another Spanish course.…

The class room is over its capacity because there are roughly about 10 students without seats so they have to sit on the floor. The first week of school was pretty simple in this class mostly just introduction and having to write a few made up stories.…

A lack of knowledge regarding English alienates Rodriguez from the other students who were, by upbringing, given a head start in their English education. Rodriguez quickly develops the idea of conflicting ideas and worlds surrounding English and Spanish. As he had only spoken Spanish with his family it had become an immensely personal language to him, and since he had been raised speaking and hearing the language it was much safer than its linguistic counterpart.…

Laura is fluent in Spanish, and feels just as comfortable speaking it as she does with English. In contrast, Anthony stated while he can speak Spanish, he does not feel as confident with it as he does with English. I had asked Anthony whether or not he believed learning Spanish at home or at school made the process easier. He said learning it at home was easier for him because it was less structured and more of what he would be exposed to on a regular basis. He went on to say the type Spanish taught in schools is rather traditional and not what many native speakers use on a regular basis.…
