Personal Narrative: The Beast

I can feel the cold seeping through my blankets lightly creeping into my skin. I sit up and open my eyes the morning sun gives me a gentle greeting. I dress myself and head for the door excited to see what smells so extraordinary. The adults are sitting by the fire I join them to see what stories they have in store for me shortly after we are all packed up ready for the first ride of the day. The beast I ride is a Honda Rincon 650 accompanied by an array of magnificent machines some brand new side by sides about 11,000 dollars apiece. We start are engines like the start of a great race. We head out one by one as we ride down the road the air in the hollows of the mountain cold air still lies, hitting my face every so often. We ride for hours

The day started like any other, wake up before the sun hits our cozy apartment. Travis, Daniel and I began packing prior to bolting for school, we pondered driving to school but the radio advised against it. After class let out we had to prepare for the long journey: we needed chains that took entirely too long, from putting them on for the first time, to having to take them off and putting them back on, replacing them when they snapped, trying to get the car out of the snow, and attaching the new ones that didn’t fit wasting even more time. The chains were necessary to traverse the icy mountain…

The unforgiving engine roared as if it ran off imperial power, not petrol. I watched my house dip below the horizon as we darted further and further into the moonlit midnight. Limitless with curiosity, we chased the dim street lamps afoot that would guide us to our eventual destination. As time flew by, so did the miles. At the budding age of fifteen I had already crashed three times, but still hadn’t been badly injured, I felt invincible, infinite and so, we would push this powerful beast as far as we could’ the speedometer escalated with every blink.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

We were up before the crack of dawn. Putting on layers of clothes, spraying our feet with Scent-A-Way and getting all of the hunting gear ready were only minor steps to the long day that was lying ahead. The thirty-minute ride to Richfield felt like much longer and the walk to the stand felt miles long. I kept my head down as we trekked to the deer stand, placing my feet where my dad’s had been…

It was warm July weekend, and I was stuck at yet another racetrack in southwest Iowa. I was there for one reason, and one reason only; to watch and support my two brothers and their passion of riding dirtbikes. This was a grueling activity that I didn’t particularly enjoy, and I would never enjoy it as long as I lived, because of the terrible event that unfolded on this treacherous day. The air was blisteringly hot at almost ninety-eight degrees, and even the wind blew hot on my skin.…

Have you ever heard the term home is where the heart is? In the summer after my freshman year, I found this to be true. I encountered experiences that illuminated the value of time spent with family and how this creates a sense of home. My family and a few members of my congregation went on a mission trip to Duluth and Superior. We did a variety of things such as helping people in hunger stricken areas, working and arranging clothes in a woman’s shelter, and spending time with kids at Superior’s Boy’s…

My Psychological Experience When I decided to go back to school, I had no plans of perusing a psychology degree, I just left a large tech company and gained some experience analyzing, creating, and manipulating data. I found myself enjoying the work a great deal, but knew if I was going to do that kind of work as a career I needed to go to school to do so. My initial plan was to get a degree in data base administration when I started at Bellevue collage in Bellevue Washington, but as I worked through the course work I found I had little interest in the material and felt very much out of place amongst my fellow students. Interestingly, while I was taking the technical classes, I took an intro to psychology course to fill an elective and…
