Personal Narrative: The Beast

I slowly cocked my gun, Aidan’s arm was slung around my shoulder. As we began the long trek down the hallway, I could not shake the feeling that someone, or something, was watching me. I glanced over at him, lying limp over my shoulder. We were halfway there, and an all too familiar growl was erupting from behind us. We started to sprint, not knowing if we were going to make it. Our salvation was within reach. It was the year of 2012, a fairly normal day. My best friend Aidan Aird was on his way over to my house. Oblivious to the beast that prowled, I heard a knock on my door. I launched all of the rest of my toys into the toy box and rushed to the door. My mom had already let him in. As we entered the living room, I remembered what we had planned: The most magnificent, most extreme, most high stakes Nerf battle of the century. As we geared up, the beast was preparing for an ambush much more serious. As we loaded our plastic firearms for the Battle of Couchburg, a dark evil that can only be described as a being of solidified hate prowled in the darkness. We began to fire at each other, screaming as the foam projectiles flew. It was a bloodbath. The Jakobians were losing territory to the Aidansons, and were forced to retreat to Dining Room Run. Thousands of cushions on both sides had …show more content…
Four legs of power, prowess and danger slowly snaked toward us. The beast was ready to pounce. Unsure of what to do, Aidan and I drew our weapons, ready to open fire. The beast fired first. She flew through the air, and unable to find a superior solution, I grabbed the nearest shield. Unfortunately for him, it was Aidan. He screamed and then went limp. I had to save him. I drew my weapon and fired. A flash of gray and white signaled that the beast had fled, but I was sure that she was not done with us just yet. I helped my comrade to his knees, and to his great difficulty, he looked up at

The Battle of Long Tan only lasted three and a half hours. Too short to be considered a war yet too brutal to be classified as a simple ’fight.’ On the 18th of August 1966, 2,500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers sided together to create one half of a battle which could only be completed with the involvement of 100 Australian and New Zealand rivals. Through intense rain and mud, each side sacrificed their possible deaths in order to regain land rights. 350 deaths later the Australian victory was achieved, as a result of the Vietnam army’s decision to back down due to their rivals increasing strength.…

In the Ambrose Bierce story “Chickamauga”, he uses the description of how the child saw the soldiers that were crawling through the grass, and how afraid of them he was at first. He wasn’t sure what they were until he noticed that they were closer to him. “They were men. They crept upon their hands and knees; they used their hands only, dragging their legs; they used their knees only, their arms hanging useless at their sides; they strove to rise their feet, but feel prone in the attempt” (Ambrose, 139).…

During the 1860s, in a gloomy, dark short story, “Chickamauga” Ambrose Bierce shows the true horrors of war anticipating condescension imagery, malicious hyperbole and tenacious diction. Bierce point out “ many were streaked and grouted with red” and “he laughed as he watched” to illustrate the innocence version of a romanticize war, but wars are devastation. Bierce use small animals as "enemies" because they symbolize the internal nature of this common boy to go to war, to fight and to kill. Portraying the ruthless war, the boy laughed at the cold bodies “contrast between his laughter” showing how he should act and how he really acted. The readers are disgusted and applauded when “they were his horse” as he rides and play with dead corps…

Throughout history, wars start for no reason other than a greed for something more than what a country already owns. It appears as though everyone always wants more than they have and never seems to be content with what they own. At this moment Luidegast’s warriors arrived on the field. They had clearly seen what had passed between the two outposts, and, just as Siegfried was about to lead Liudegast away, they charged at him, thirty strong, whereupon the hero defended his mighty captive with tremendous blows.…

Tim O'Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, eloquently (NR) demonstrates the theme of ‘beauty in horror’. The novel emphasizes this theme through the underlying foil between beauty and atrocities that are not uncommon in war stories. O'Brien focuses on the imagery of these events as well as the tone to illustrate the difficulties that soldiers are exposed to and how they have been conditioned to their situation to no longer see the horror in these horrific events rather start seeing them as beautiful events. The relevance of this theme is most prevalent in the short story, “How to Tell a True War Story.” This short story illustrates many different barbaric events that have been very beautifully illustrated.…

Silent Fields We had been hiking for half a day by the time we reached the base camp to Mount Fairfield. My feet were blistered and my clothes were wet with sweat. I looked like I had gone into a sauna with my clothes on, but that didn’t stop me from winking at the crew of women mountaineers that we passed on the way to base camp two hours earlier. I lit a cigarette as I walked; I deserved it.…

I knew from the moment I walked in to Sleepy Hollow park in Des Moines that I was going to have a good time. I was there for the Renaissance Faire during the Pirates and Wenches week. The smell of food and the sound of chatter was heavy in the air as a man dressed as a knight gave us a wristband, confirming that we had paid to get into the fair. I grinned at Sydney, and she smiled back, our excitement showing. My parents talked about the events as they looked over the schedule, but I wasn’t listening.…
