We had so much fun even though it felt like my heart is going to pop out of my chest ! On such a nice day, I didn’t think I could have been more scared. Me and my four cousins, my two aunts, and my uncle. We were at our beach house in Santa Cruz California. It is about three minutes away from the boardwalk and right down the beach is the surfing docks. We were going to go boogie boarding but the huge scary waves and the dangerous cliffs around us.

Each year, a pilgrimage to the Florida or Alabama gulf coast is a highly anticipated and enjoyed event for my family. In the beginning, it was just my wife and I. Man oh man, these trips were some of the most relaxing times that I can remember. Now, our yearly “beach fest” includes our two children, Kaylee and Garrett. While this is still a wonderful family event, I no longer use the phrase “relaxing”. Elbert Hubbard once said, “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who just had one”.…

For an event so dramatic in my life, I still find it strange that I only vaguely remember it, especially because I could have lost my life that day. But I do recall that it was a clear, sunny day in one of the warmer months of 2011, and that I was still an energetic, ever-enthusiastic 10-year-old, much like an obnoxious, but adorable puppy. That day, I ventured to the beach at the aptly-named city of Oceanside, California with Carleigh, my 5-year-old little sister, and our dear old mother. She and I had been psyching ourselves up all week long before we left. What excited my sister was merely the chance to play with the family friends we were destined to meet up with, but I couldn’t wait to catch a ride the waves with my brand-new boogie board.…
