My alarm ringing, reading 6 AM on my phone, and I confused why I am up this early. Then I remember that I am up to surf. Shoving down my eggs and cheese and rushing out of the door with my board, I am eager to surf. Crossing the street, I can already feel the cool ocean breeze. I walk on to the beach, I am ready for my feet to burn in the hot sand. I realize that the sun is just rising and the sand has not had a chance to warm up. The beach is empty except for other surfers hoping to catch some good waves. Watching the waves crash, I can’t wait to get out.
The refreshing water wakes me up as I paddle out. The early morning sun is blinding me while I look for waves. As my eyes adjust to the light, I see a wave in the corner of my eye. I

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…

The water is sparkling in the sun with hints of different shades of blues. I can smell the salt in the air and feel the ocean breeze cross my neck. I slowly stand up and approach the ocean water. As I put one foot in I can feel the bitter warmness of the water soak my feet into the ocean. My body slowly starts to sink into the sand as each wave overcomes my legs, giving me a strong pose, and letting my body over stand each wave.…

I’ve swam in the ocean and been boating upon it, but i’d never had the marvelous experience to ride the waves. We ran toward the waves with our boards pressed on the side of our abdomen and hips. The feel of sea drizzle upon my toasted red cheeks I just couldn't help but smile. As the moon pulled the tide in and out, time was not apparent in my mind. The first attempts proved that I wasn't a natural-born surfer by any means.…

Each year, a pilgrimage to the Florida or Alabama gulf coast is a highly anticipated and enjoyed event for my family. In the beginning, it was just my wife and I. Man oh man, these trips were some of the most relaxing times that I can remember. Now, our yearly “beach fest” includes our two children, Kaylee and Garrett. While this is still a wonderful family event, I no longer use the phrase “relaxing”. Elbert Hubbard once said, “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who just had one”.…
