Personal Narrative: The Battle Of Monte Grappa

As the last gunshot echoed throughout the luscious Venetian Plains from Monte Grappa we knew it was the sign of victory. The Austro-Hungarians were finally retreating and were being bombed round after round from our artillery. Cheers erupted throughout the divisions stationed at different fortified areas all around our defences on Monte Grappa. After a month of fighting we had finally defended Monte Grappa, the back door to the Piave river and Italy, our wonderful home of where our loved ones lived. Beside me my little brother who I had sworn to protect was standing as proud as a lion next to me although still shaken up from battle. Our commanding officer Armando Diaz had been biding our time and waiting until he was sure that our army could push the Austro Hungarians out of Monte Grappa. The Austro Hungarians armed fortress, at the bottom of the mountain was heavily guarded. With a network of trenches expanding out from the fortress that they had built it looked like a spider web. It was an impregnable base yet we were going for an assault tomorrow at the break of dawn. Sitting in the trenches waiting anxiously for our orders and suddenly our general appeared. “Stefano!” The general barked “come over here!” I got up and and smiled at my brother reassuringly after seeing the worried look on his face. I climbed out of our trenches and stepped out to the cool, fresh mountain air near the summit of Monte grappa. “Walk with me” he said with a calm voice and started walking towards the summit of the mountain where our main fortified defences where.
