My mother, brother and I arrive in the Atlantic City airport after a surprisingly short two hour flight. After dawdling away time by alternating between electronic games and magazine scavenger hunts, or sleeping (in my mother’s case), we were ready to see our timeshare hotel suite. Wah can’t people go to de store, buy ah loaf of bred… It’s so much easia an much cheapa… Yuh know an egg sandwich-an egg salad sandwich cost suh much! Yuh can jus’ go to de store an buy a loaf of bread fah much cheapa.” I don’t remember his name but he was amiable and interesting to talk to, despite his repetitiveness. Buildings were abandoned almost daily, and as a result, empty lots sprawled over the city like weeds in gardens. Dark clouds had permanent residents in the sky, no matter the season. News of violent deaths were commonplace, and every time one was announced, you only hoped and prayed it wasn’t someone you knew. For almost half of my life, that environment was an aspect of my very being.…

The Plane Ride When I was nine my family started a move from the tranquil suburbs of San Jose, California to the desert city of Windhoek, Namibia, located in southern Africa. My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. These suitcases are what we carried to the airport as we prepared for our journey. I felt no small amount of apprehension and excitement in what lay ahead of me in the new country, but an event I would experience in the coming flight would forever change and shape my perspective of how I see the…
