Personal Narrative: The Amish Way Of Life

Improved Essays
On June 16, 2008 my family and I took a trip to Pennsylvania. It was an eye-opening experience. On the trip we met an Amish couple that changed the way I will look at life forever. No cell phones, television, music, none of that. Just family and quality time. Things that an average family does not experience anymore. It all started out one afternoon in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. As we were touring the land we noticed the Amish were giving horse and buggy rides. My parents thought that it would be a great family experience. As we were waiting in line, the wait was finally over. An older couple approached my family and welcomed us as we took our seats. On the tour, the couple was informing us on the Amish culture and way of life. As we were all engaged in the conversation, they offered my family the opportunity to stay in their guest house. …show more content…
I was so adapted to being in Florida with neighbors, chaos, and noise. This was the complete opposite of Florida. Their house sat on acres of farm land, and their only neighbors were their cattle. As I was standing outside waiting for the couple to lead us to our room, the fence caught my eye. It looked different from the one that we had at my house. This one had big thick wires the surrounded their yard. I was curious as to how the fence felt. As my young nosey fingers wrapped around the wire, I felt electricity shoot through my body. I then jerked my hand away in a hurry. The reason why the fence looked so different from the one I was used to seeing is because this one was an electric fence. At that moment, all I could hear was the laughter coming from my family. I was always the one in the family to do something that was not always logical, so my family was accustomed to

While I may have been raised in a small town in North Carolina and C.S. Lewis raised in Ireland, we both came to experience a great moment in both of our lives that had a lot of similarities. He was born in 1898 and I was born in 1998, I came in this world right at a year after he did. The amount of change that happened in the world during that time did not change the same key components of family, nature, and beauty that were all used in both of our special events. My experience with the Blyde River Canyon, was extremely similar to C.S. Lewis’s experience with the Toy Garden. My moment came when I was taken on a trip to south africa with my grandparents and my two younger cousins.…

“Tell me more about english life,” I pled. As we sat by the river, my friend Levi began to tell me about the amazing restaurants, movies, and the exciting English life of the twenty-first century. The more I learned more about what I was missing, the more I realized I had to escape this dreadful town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.…

I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…

I was meeting people who had gone through hell and back to make it here while I got here solely because of my parent’s hard work. These people helped me explore my compassionate side by telling me their stories of exactly what it took to come here. I grew incredibly thankful for the opportunity to meet and help these strangers and began making constant adjustments to my own life based on their story’s incite. For example, starting sophomore year I started missing the school bus to stay after school and then walked 2.5 miles home every day I needed to. If I had to baby sit that day, I would probably walk them to school with me and turn the trip into a Pokémon Go quest.…

My immediate family enjoyed Top 40 music (which is fine), but I wanted to branch out; I wanted to learn and enjoy music more than anyone ever did. I was the first person in my family to play an instrument, and later learned two more instruments.
