When I was about ten years old, I was camping in Lake Eaton. It had been fourth of July weekend. On July third, I was playing man hunt in the dark with a handful of my close friends. I was being chased; all of a sudden, I was on the ground. I didn’t realize what had happened until I felt the excruciating pain traveling down my arm seconds after the fall. I had tripped over a enormous tree root, and I dropped putting all of my weight on my arm. Don’t even ask how I didn’t see the root, because I couldn’t tell you. I immediately started crying; it hurt like a son of a gun. I went back in my camper and slept through the night. I knew something was definitely wrong because when I woke up in the morning, because I couldn’t bend my black and blue, swollen arm.

My mom, sister, grandma, and I went to New York City to watch a Broadway show and go shopping all day. We took a train down and back. After our all day excursion of shopping in the big apple, we went to see The Addam’s Family on broadway. Brooke Shields had been starring in the play because she was playing the part of Morticia, the mother. Brooke Shields is a famous actress who has starred in many movies in her career. The show was amazing; and at the end, the audience gathered outside to meet the cast. There were lots of people lined up along the fence, and somehow I was right on the edge of the fence. The crew began to walk out of the curtains behind broadway. Brooke Shields immediately spotted my vibrant orange cast on the forearm. She walked over to me and asked me exactly what happened and how I managed to break my arm.

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

Growing up I loved to watch re-runs of the Addams Family on television. The reason I loved this quirky, yet comical show is clearly in the title. Obviously, the familiarity with the name “Addams” was an instant connection. But really, it was the word “Family”. This macabre and bizarre family was not your traditional television family, and that is what I loved.…
