Personal Narrative: Ten Hours Outside Of Community Service

Decent Essays
Over the last two years, I have completed over ten hours of community service. I chose to complete my hours outside of healthcare. To me nursing is more than working in the medical field, but immersing myself into the community to help in anyway I can.
Five of my volunteer hours were spent working at a children’s ballet recital. I spent those hours working backstage entertaining a group of 2-3 year olds. Entertaining 2-3 year olds can be straining, but I had eight of them I was responsible to not only entertain but also get on and off stage while maintain their recital attire. It was no easy fete. The remainder of my hours was spent working in the preschool classroom at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As I stated previously my hours

My position as a Team Lead this past year has been a great opportunity to build on my strengths, improve my weaknesses, and develop new talents. Over the past year I have worked diligently on developing myself to become a better employee and coworker. I have tried my best to continue to be approachable and friendly not only with the agents, but also with everyone I come in contact with, in building and in the community during volunteer events. I have strived to make myself flexible and available whenever needed. At the beginning of 2015 I was assigned to Queue Hawk three days a week and spent the remaining two days answering the rotary line.…

One of my goals for the Community Affairs team is that we provide services to our internal and external business partners in the most cost effective manner possible. As a public agency, we use taxpayers’ money and as such, the use of overtime is reserved for only those times that merit its use. To assist the team in achieving this crucial goal, I have certain expectations regarding the use of overtime and working hours outside of your approved work schedule. The purpose of this letter is to reinforce these expectations.…

The day I started my new job in the Department of Correction, I remember having an exciting feeling, but also extremely nervous. When I walked into the facility it was nothing like it was betrayed to be on T.V. I was expecting to see inmates behind bars, and hearing the sound of the gates close behind you. Instead it was more like 50 men was walking around and able to touch you if they wanted to, there was no bars just a room of like 25 cells with an open area, which is referred to as the common area. The feeling of nervousness increased while the feeling of excitement went away. At that moment I was not sure if this was the right route I wanted to take.…

Doing community services with LTW staffs is profoundly enjoyable and meaningful. Serving in Harlem food bank impacted me the most. That not only a fun experience, when I learned to say “chicken” “ham” and “fish” in Spanish, but also an experience of mutual respect between people, when I kept smiling, greeting while other people smiling and greeting at me. I learned something that I could never get from classroom there, which was people’s inherent kindness. Maybe the people who were getting help there were not in their ideal life stage, however they all showed full respect and kindness as well as…

“Yeeww gunna taaake awl dat?” the mealy mouthed Beaumont native asked me. A question that still haunts me when I think about a certain weekend I went camping along the Neches River. Looking at his displaced eyeball, and the huge wad of tobacco juice he spat onto the ground, a quickly delivered response of “Yes, yes we are!!!” was retorted. Planned and necessary, every item was personally deemed necessary in order to “survive” the weekend.…

Volunteering One day, I walked to my friends house. Her mom had just had a baby boy. Just by looking at her, I could tell she was exhausted. So I offered to babysit the baby, so she wouldn’t have to worry about when her baby's diaper needed to be changed, or when he needed to be fed. She said I didn’t have to, but she knew I had a baby brother.…

When people ask me why I am interested in nursing, my thoughts always return to my late father. I was his caregiver for eight months while he battled with lung cancer. During his hospital visits and treatment we encountered many different nurses. Some of the most memorable were the hospice nurses that cared for him during his last days. My feeling at that time was that it takes a special kind of person to be a hospice nurse.…

I chose to enter into the field of nursing for numerous reasons. I went into my undergraduate study at The College at Brockport SUNY as an Exercise Science major, with plans to help those in improving their quality of life. My goal was to ultimately be in a setting where those around me require proper support and kindheartedness. My program consisted of learning both the anatomical side of exercise, as well as the personal side. I learned throughout the program that in order to be involved in the medical field, a person must be able to relate to people in need, and truly go above and beyond to assist them.…

My first day as a volunteer at the Boys and Girls club was a very well day. I had already known that there are a lot of kids and the time that I went in at was homework time. Since it was the first day I was unsure of where to go and what to do; thankfully the staffs there are very welcoming and very inclusive. The surprised on my first day was the welcoming, curiosity and the flood of questions that some of the children had asked me. I had plan to be the one asking the children questions, instead they beat me to it and it was hard to answer some of their questions.…

The importance of community service has been interlaced into the majority of the nursing classes I have had at the bachelor’s level and the master’s level of education. Being active in community service has been presented as a cornerstone of my nursing career in the work place as a leader within my organization. I am learning now that being involved in community service holds true for the nurse educator as well. Dawson & Freed (2008), state that “professional nurses have a commitment to society and a responsibility to advance the nursing profession by taking on leadership roles in the community” (p. 268). Studies have also supported that serving the community increases self-confidence by contributing to services to the community (MacIlvaine,…
