Personal Narrative: Team Player

The place where I spend my days is enclosed from the rest of the public. A place, that leaves my forehead trickling down with sweat. Where the wire fences carry windscreens, at the height of seven feet. A height that should prevent balls from escaping the cage. On the ground, lays a foundation of smooth cement colored a soft shade of red with six green rectangles reaching the length of 75ft. The outline of white lines designate the center lines, ally lines and the base lines of the court. This is where I spend about ten to fifteen hours per week, running up and down the courts, swinging the racquet as fast I can, to return the tennis balls back to my teammates and opponents. As a school athlete, I have the responsibility of representing the school and my teammates. The tennis courts to me has become a symbol, of having fun and maintaining outstanding qualities to be a team player. Being a team player is more than showing up for practice and playing games. All I had done before, was focus on my classes and help out others whenever I could. In high school, my plan was to focus on my classes and even challenge myself with AP courses. Sweet and simple. In reality, life is so quick to change and the high school path can be a rocky with twist and turns. Just as in my freshman year, I had planned to play softball, but quickly turned away when I was told that I could, “Break my arm playing.” I was dainty and scrawny then; four years of tennis later, I’m still dainty. Except now, I have a few muscles that tend to show off. To the truth, I have always been reckless, so I wasn’t willing to take that chance. In tennis, however, I have scraped my knee when, I so recklessly tripped off the bleachers. Not to mention, the several tennis balls that I have been hit by. Unorthodoxly, it is obstacles in tennis that have me hooked in. Such as the sizzling sun and the frosty clouds in the

The block in Sunnycliffs had a tennis court with bark-roofed shacks at its edge to provide shade from the sun and shelter from the heat. It seems that all members of the Cook family besides Tom enjoyed playing tennis to some extent, and, with their court being the only one in the area, it soon became popular with the locals too. Tennis dominated Jean’s memory of her youth. She never lacked practice, nor competi-tors, saying, “We always had a full house… there was always somebody there to play tennis with.” She played most days of the week, especially on weekends, and com-peted in interschool competitions against teams from Renmark and St Arnaud.…

Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

I thought this game is fun, but I would never love it. My mom and I would try to go play every weekend and after awhile I began to get the hang of things. The next summer my mom enrolled me into the one week mini camps ran by my future high school coach. Those few summer camps began the spark of interest in me and that is where I began to want to play tennis more than just in the summer. I learned that I was skilled enough to succeed and getting more practice would evolve myself.…

“Alright now Skin, I need you to be my leadoff here and get a rally going!” I do not respond, because I obviously know how important this one at bat is for the team and for myself. One thing coach loves doing, making sure I know how much I am accountable for. There is no comment to explain to me of how dependent I am on these upcoming moments for the team, so don’t make it any worse. To start off and to have the power to set the tone of the whole inning.…

I found my second home on the tennis courts. It was a go-to for stress-relief, fun, and competition and the epitome of camaraderie. The sport provided me with a daily routine and stability while navigating the intricacies of high school. When I first began playing competitive tennis, at around the age of 11, I almost immediately found much success in my New Jersey tennis tournaments. However, due to my lack of experience in competitive play, I was unable to come to the realization that my tremendous amount of success was due in part by the fact that the tournaments I was playing were considered very low level tournaments. I continued playing these low level tournaments on a consistent basis for another year, triumphing in many of them, and putting up a stellar showing in the ones I didn’t win. Eventually, however, my father and I discovered that there exist much higher level tournaments in the Tri-State Area than the ones I was playing.…
