On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

This essay will describe how Sarah Wu’s book, Fed up with Lunch, discusses the horrendous problem outcomes found inside of a lunch system in a large Elementary School in Chicago that may include the true time that is given to eat the lunch, the unexpected nutrition found inside of every dish given, as well as the truth of keeping all the nutritional facts away from the public. Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…

As I brainstormed about things that I carry, nothing stood out. Not a single prized-possession, no metaphoric symbols, no family heirlooms, not even an everyday object that I could somehow pull a deeper meaning out of came to mind. I had no words to describe what I carry, nothing at all. And I then realized that I couldn’t have described it any better. I carry nothing.…

To me the lunch room was an example of semi-organized chaos. To those that know what is going on it is a well-oiled machine. It took me a days to figure out what was going on, but I finally got it. First things first, the students come in through the front doors of the cafeteria, the ones that brought their lunch box go and find a set at their designated table. The students that will be eating cafeteria food stay in a line with the teacher in the front.…

My dad started to grill some steak, cheeseburgers, and sausage. I could smell the food from a distance, it smelled amazing and could hear the meat sizzle on the grill. As guests came they each got their plate of food and could hear them talking about what they did in summer and also complimented my dad on the food. After I ate my delicious food, I played soccer with my brother and some friends for a short time because it was a hot day. I later went to get some dessert and some fruit before more of the guests came.…

Lunch. The time in school where students converge on grey tables and metal chairs to chomp down on your microwave noodles with a cold sweet tea and a bag of doritos. Lunch is an important time in the school day. In fact, if you asked me, lunch is my favorite time of the day besides dismissal. It is at the lunch table where life’s biggest questions are asked, and we attempt to answer them.…

The Trip to the Grocery Store I haven’t seen him in weeks or maybe even months, I thought as I glared across the small distance between where I was standing and my dad’s car. With my One Direction CD clutched in my hands, I started to close the distance by walking towards his car. I opened the door and slipped in, and then he started to drive to the grocery store. At the time I was under the illusion that my dad would be even slightly happy to see me, but no.…
