Personal Narrative: Sycamore Pool

Improved Essays
For my second passport voyage I went to Lower Bidwell Park, specifically Sycamore Pool. Since I am currently sick, I decided I wouldn’t go for a swim. Instead, I threw a blanket down, got my homework and speaker out, and eat some chips while enjoying what nature has to offer. When arriving at the park, I noticed the park's surroundings was sketchy because of the amount of homeless people, but other then that, I thought the park was spectacular and calming. I come from a desert, nothing about my valley screams nature, so going to one mile was definitely a new experience. Since the area has a lot of grass, I identified with it due to playing soccer on a the little grass fields that we had. Personally, I think that One-mile is valuable to Chico

The smell of chlorine on my skin is a scent I don't even realize any more. I let out a deep yawn as I slowly tie up my hair into my specific bun. I then in a one fluid motion I latch my cap on my bun and pull it over my head. The next step is my goggles, I place them on my eyes and let the tint change my surroundings. I jump into the cool, but some how thick water of the YWCA’s pool.…

The course looked inviting and manicured, taunting players to challenge it. From the numerous balls in the water and into neighboring backyards, I would say that it has a pretty good win percentage. I walked to the practice green in order to roll a few practice putts, make a few short chip shots, go through a quick stretching routine, and take a multitude of practice swings. Just like any other round, the thought of shooting par, playing to the level that the course was designed for, had crossed my mind. I have played the course probably over a hundred times.…

There we were told the route through the Cedar Dell Pond we were heading in and shown naturally occurring jagged rocks from Professor Broadrose. While still standing by the windmill we were told to look over the pond area and imagine there were no trees, this would be a Tundra. This is what existed 9-11 thousand years BCE. The day was hot, at this time there were no clouds in the sky.…

In a world of cars, highways, and skyscrapers, it can be difficult to see how much nature matters and affects our lives. For me, nature has always been an incredible place to go to get to know myself better and learn to appreciate the little things in life. When I was ten years old, I moved to West Texas. I loved swimming in the lakes and ponds around my home before, so I was disappointed when I found out that there was only one body of water near my new home. This “lake” (about the size of a football field) was called Clearwater Lake. It took about an hour’s time to drive there. The first time my family drove over there, I was amazed by how many people there were, all the cars packed liked sardines, the people moving so slowly it was like molasses.…

Absent from ‘The World of Pond Stories’ by Dr. Stewart Bitkoff are politically-polarizing statements that these days pass for mainstream discussion and describe the plethora media sound bytes that seemingly inundate my day to day life. In other words, reading these stories was a refreshing reprieve from the endless cycle of jingoistic and sensationalistic rhetoric. To further elaborate, I found at the heart of each story an open-ended reflection oftentimes, at least in my initial reading, an opportunity to reflect on human nature namely our relationship with ourselves, the world around us inclusive of all its denizens human and non. One thing which Dr.Bitkoff does and has done well over the course of his many books is to present the reader…
