Personal Narrative: Swing Choir

Improved Essays
It was a very hot and sultry April day in Philadelphia. For the past three days I was on a Goodwill Tour with a group called Swing Choir. We always said in Swing Choir that we are a missionary group that just happens to sing and dance. Our mission was to perform for the most marginalized of people and help bring some joy into their lives. However, if you were to tell this to the annoyed, hot and exhausted junior I was at the time, I probably would have rolled my eyes and told you how excited I am to go home soon. Little did I know that day, my life and my perspective on people would literally change forever. On this hot April day nothing extraordinary happened to change my perspective. The skys didn't open up with a burst of thunder, nor did I have an out of body experience where all the truth in the world became apparent to me. What did happen was very profound and …show more content…
I still remember cringing at the thought of performing in a stuffy and very humid nursing home “auditorium.” As we began to sing and dance I was furious with the fact that I could be relaxing at home during my Easter break, but instead I was sweating bullets in what felt like the hottest place in the world. This feeling went on throughout our one hour set. As we began our closing song, a feeling of excitement rushed over me! I was so enthralled with the idea of leaving this nursing home and relaxing. Then I caught the eye of a lady sitting front row in a wheelchair; she way crying tears of joy at our performance and was having the time of her life. I remember thinking to myself in that moment that I cannot even remember a time when I was that joyous about something. After our closing song all 30 of us in the group began to walk out into the audience to talk with everyone. My friend and I headed straight towards the lady in the wheelchair who looked so elated to see us high schoolers

The event that I decided to go was BYU Baroque Ensemble, a production made by BYU students, taking place at Madsen Recital Hall Harris Fine Arts Center on November 3. The idea of making a baroque orchestra is where musician get together to make a perfect composition of music, the baroque orchestra is made up mostly of stringed instruments, when you listen you feel something different that makes you see it from another perspective, you just can’t stop listening and focus on every note that the musicians are playing. The type of instruments that were utilized in conjunction were the basso continuo, played by a viol, cello or bassoon. Other parts were added between the melody and the bass by a keyboard instrument, usually a harpsichord or organ and the development of tonal harmony, in which the melodic voices movement remains under the functional chord progression.…

For the last two years, I have contributed to my Advanced Women’s Show Choir’s success as a performer and as a dance captain. My talent as a dancer and my ability to quickly learn choreography led to my selection as dance captain. This leadership role requires me to be a responsible person, a patient teacher and a supportive team member. Being a part of a nationally top-ranked show choir, I know the requirements of my role, and I was always thrilled to be selected as a dance captain during my junior and senior years. As dance captain, I schedule and lead dance sectionals, helping the girls review the choreography from previous rehearsals.…

Today My wagon train and I are leaving Ft. Kearny in search of Courthouse Rock, but first we have reach the California crossing and cross the south platte river. The river is too wide to be bridged and to shallow for a ferry so we have to cross it by using the sandbars. When we got in the water one of the children from another wagon almost drowned because of the current. It took us 30 minutes to get from one end of the river to the other.…

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

A city with an area measuring 3,255 miles squared and lying on the Gastineau Channel, Juneau, Alaska captured my breath and left me speechless. For some Juneau is a venue to buy trinkets and take family pictures for the Christmas card. For others Juneau is a place to hunt vicious black bears or reel in an Artic Char. For me Juneau, Alaska is significant for it allowed me to strengthen in my faith and believe God created the Earth we live on. Foremost, the sky was foggy, and the air was chilly, with a brisk wind blowing around.…

Music has the power to transporting us back to a particular experience, memory, or era without that being its intended purpose. The documentary, Alive Inside, provided a look into how the brain’s reaction to music for nursing home residents with dementia provided an alternative therapy by allowing them to temporarily regain the memories and movement of their younger years. At the suggestion of Dan Cohen, social worker, nursing home volunteer and non-profit organizer of Music & Memory, the film’s director followed him for a day and what he discovered that day of the extent of influence that music had on these individuals, he decided to continue to follow Cohen for three years to document the phenomenal effects that this type of therapy. I walked in and stopped abruptly, halting busy traffic. This scene was like nothing I had ever experienced before. Music blasted singing out from the speakers and echoing off of the walls of the auditorium. Shouts filled the room, overpowering the upbeat tunes, as kids, staff, and volunteers cheered for their villages. Lights flashed all around the room revealing huge signs for only split seconds at a time.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

The minutes before the concert seemed to go by extremely fast and before I knew it, the concert was here. When it was time for my first and easiest solo, my heart beat was pounding in my head and I could feel the sweat dripping off my instrument's keys, but the warm smile from the conductor as my first note sang out put me at ease, and I played a good solo. The performance continued and soon it was time for the big, super exposed one that seemed to end the concert. I completely forgot about the audience and other distractions, and it was just me, my music, the conductor, and the rest of the band playing. Time seemed to slow down, and I put as much heart into the music as I could possibly manage.…

Wearing a heavy, uncomfortable uniform with a feathery plume strapped to my head while simultaneously playing an instrument and stomping around a football field does not sound very glamorous at a glance. However, this is how I chose to spend the majority of my Saturdays and Tuesday nights when I signed up for marching band. Enticed by the promise of a magical and musical trip to Disney, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. I suffered through hours upon hours of music memorization and painstakingly trying to perfect my form and sync my steps to everyone else’s. The goal is to move as one, to melt into one band whose sounds and movements are precise, identical, and smooth.…
