Personal Narrative: Susie's Swim Team

Susie was a typical freshman girl on Central High’s swim team. Living in California, Susie was used to spending most of her time in the water. Both of her parents loved to be outdoors and enjoyed an active lifestyle that they passed that onto their daughter. Easily passing though swimming lessons, the lead lifeguard approached Susie’s parents about the possibility of Susie joining a swim team. She said, “Even though Susie is too young to compete, I think Susie could get a head start on learning the basics, that way when she meets the age requirement of competing, she will already know what to expect and can compete at a higher level.” Susie’s parents decided to talk it over with Susie on their way home that night. She still enjoyed swimming, but would only go to the pool when no one else was around. As time went on, Susie noticed that upon entering the water, her toes would web together. Progressively, she noticed her thighs conjoin together and then her shins. She knew what was happening then, she was becoming a mermaid! Her love for the water had grown so much that she was actually becoming a sea creature! To keep her secret hidden, Susie stayed away from the water when others were present, but as soon as the beach or pool had been cleared out by the public, Susie enjoyed her time in the water. It was hard to resist the urge enter the water but she didn’t want people to know her secret. She was afraid that if the public found out, she would just find herself on some scientist’s table getting tested on! Susie decided that she would never enter the water again, no matter how bad she wanted to. Instead, she focused her attention on a new hobby, rock-climbing. Her parents were concerned when she first quit the team, but later believed that she was just a typical teenager trying to find her true

    The water gives her a confidence and also emancipates her from the inferior feeling she experiences when she is outside of the pool. Smith introduces Fatou’s superiority in the pool as Fatou “spots these big men, paddling frantically like babies, struggling simply to stay afloat,” and as a reaction, “she prides herself on her own abilities, having taught herself to swim” (2).
