Personal Narrative: A State Of Mind

Survival is a state of mind. It’s not always life or death: Sometimes it’s a matter of others not finding out what happened. “I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing.” Johnny Carson had that right. Until that day, I was pretty squeaky clean. Being a senior gave me an unspoken freedom, though. Picture it. The day was cold; it was freezing, really. The freezing drizzle was hard to keep off my short, 2-mile drive from our big red farmhouse to school. It was slow-going, but “back in the day,” they never called school for bad roads. We all knew how to drive in it. It’s how we were raised in Western Iowa. “Let’s do it,” I said, knowing it was an adventure waiting to happen. “Okay. I’m in,” my best friend since kindergarten enthusiastically agreed. …show more content…
Atkins. Up four stairs to his glass house, we peeked in to get his attention. He let us in because, well, he liked us. We were “the good kids.” “If it’s ok, can we skip today and use it as our senior day?” We stood, waiting. I don’t recall any hesitation on his part until he reminded us to drive safely. Remember, the roads were slick, but we were great drivers. No worries and we were off. Freedom flew through our hair as chilling, swirling winter air. We jumped into the burgundy Monte Carlo, and we set out toward Sioux City. Southern Hills Mall was our destination. One can’t take a drive without drinks, so we stopped at Kirby’s Corner Market, our town’s centerpiece. Large fountain Dr. Peppers in hand, we crept toward the

It was three a.m. in early March when the wrath of winter decided to trespass and enter global warming’s territory in central Alabama. I don’t know if it was adrenaline or fear but I didn’t feel the gust of wind that swept down the street that I called my set. It was the last shot of the last day of our four-day shoot. After enduring 4-hour rain and thunderstorm delays, tornado warnings, the inconsistencies of an unreliable generator, and disgruntled town people principal photography for my 1930s film about race relations was one shot away from completion.…

We made it across the old dried up riverbed, and onto the two-lane highway. I looked back out of the yellowing oval window, and could see Mom, the girls, and all the dogs in the new 85 Accord. She was so excited for the big trip in a fancy new car with air. Living out in the desert, she had adjusted to the heat, but was so relieved to have her new “luxury car”. I waved to her, and sat back down.…

It is sunny out as I sit in the driver's seat, happy to be excused from school. The air conditioning blows heavily as I gaze out the window in anticipation when, finally, the person I'm awaiting comes into view. As she approaches, my father turns and asks me, “Are you ready.” “Absolutely,” I respond with certainty. At that moment, I was thinking it was only a matter of minutes before I was a licensed driver.…

Because of health reasons, my eldest sister, Ariel, hasn’t been able to drive for a little over a year. Sometime after Christmas, my parents dubbed me responsible enough, and Ariel well enough for me to be her new chauffeur; responsible enough of a driver, taking extra care to drive safe, and well enough to pay attention to any drifting from anything I read in the manual. The first time we took off was to take a quick trip to our local Dollar General. Ariel’s daughter, my niece, was sick with a cold so we needed to pick up some baby ibuprofen. Since Bethany, Aaron, and my dad was at work, Sierra, Elizabeth, and my mom were also sick, I was the only “driver” available.…

Driving west from New York City is a surreal experience. I went from the busy streets of Brooklyn to skyscrapers in Manhattan, to the suburbs of the outlying towns over the bridges. Around an hour into the trip, the road was submerged in a forest with hardly a house visible from the highway. Further down, was mountain chains, interspersed with agricultural lots and pastures. The climate was snowy in the winter by Lake Ontario, but some New Yorkers go there during the summer, if they can’t afford to go to the Hamptons at the tip of Long Island.…

I woke up as the bus trundled down the road through the Ozarks of Missouri in the early hours of a winter’s night; it was frigid. I was wearing only jeans and a flight jacket. The smell of booze and rancid men invaded the bus for a long ride from Kansas City to Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, through the Ozarks.…

There’s a field on my parent’s ranch that has two pairs of my sunglasses, a purple mitten lost on a sledding excursion, blood from scraped knuckles, a plethora of cuss words spat in utter frustration, and a few salty tears shed grudgingly. It’s hard to explain hating an inanimate object. I would sound crazy if I said “Dad, I hate that field below the shop,” even though I’m sure he’s read that exact statement written on my face a thousand times. Nature is unforgiving -- heartless even. It has the best poker face of all: one that can make any old fool (Like myself) into despising it animosity is exorbitant.…

I entered the door of my local high school, and I felt the uneasiness fly away. I moved through the hall where on the side I saw the countless golden and silver trophies. As I continued down the hall I saw a desk that has four pieces of paper on the bottom with letters that were organized through last name. A's-G's were on the far left while S's-Z's were on the right. In that moment we were approaching North Platte and I felt my stomach begin to shift. I’m from California, land of the beach bums and hippies. I’m not used to places like Nebraska, land with cows and big trucks. I had never had to even sit in a car for that long, and I’ve experienced 5 pm traffic.…
