Personal Narrative: Summer In St. Louis, Missouri

It is the end of summer in St. Louis, Missouri. Saturday August 9, 2014 to be exact. It was a normal hot summer weekend, unfortunately it appeared to be normal until that heated afternoon. My family and I were leaving Walmart after buying groceries for our home, then suddenly we heard police sirens from afar. Unfortunately we did not pay it any notice because it’s almost normal to hear police sirens in St. Louis during the summer. Suddenly, the sound of the sirens grew louder as they were rushing to the scene of the crime. I looked to the left of me and saw approximately ten Ferguson Police vehicles rushing on West Florissant Avenue. My family and I were curious of what was going on. The pace of my thoughts was racing as fast as the police officers, wondering if someone was seriously hurt, perhaps a robbery .

Moments later, my siblings went on social media and saw an African American male with a white V-ter tank top on and cardboard sign saying, “My son has been executed by a Ferguson Police Officer”. This was the clarification we needed to know on the reason why the ten police vehicles were rushing on West Florissant Avenue. We expeditiously informed our parents on why it was numerous police vehicles rushing down West

When we arrived to the destination, I saw an angry mob and approximately twenty police officers trying to disperse the angry mob. Suddenly, I looked toward the yellow crime scene tape, then looked down on the street and there he was, Michael Brown Jr. The son whom was executed by the Ferguson Police Officer. His blood was oozing down Clanfield Avenue, also his body lying on the ground for five hours helplessly. It was the end summer, but my was filled with chills as if it was winter. The thought of knowing he would have started college the following day. Another young soul taken from this world too

In a recent article on Grantland, staff writer Rembert Browne dialogues his impromptu visit to Ferguson, Missouri in mid-August. In opening the essay, he admits: “I don’t know what made me buy a plane ticket to St. Louis at 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Maybe it was remembering that feeling of helplessness and guilt after learning of the Trayvon Martin verdict while embarking on a carefree cross-country road trip.” Claudia Rankine’s new book, Citizen, effects a similar experience. Citizen requires the reader to enter that realm: the realm of being privileged in an otherwise deprived society; of relaxing while watching others work; this antiquated idea of modern civilization.…

In response to the deaths of Mike Brown (27 August 2014) and Ferguson (09 August 2014), many protests emerged throughout the nation. “The police response to the uprising was intended to repress and punish the population, who had dared to defy their authority” (155). As the daily protests went on, the police brutality of Ferguson increased as a result of “frustration that they {police} could not make the Black men and women of Ferguson submit” (156). The Ferguson rebellion became the “focal point for the growing anger in Black communities across the country” (157). The young people of Ferguson experienced daily harassment.…

“Not everything you posted on the internet is accurate,” my parents endlessly inform me. The media drastically amplified the incident that occurred on August 9, in the suburbs of Ferguson, Missouri. Michael Brown, eighteen, was shot six times by a police officer, generating many multifarious protests worldwide, creating awareness over racism. In “Taking Sides in Ferguson,” written by Noah C. Rothman, he discusses how the media unrepentantly chose a side, and only presenting to the public what they want the public to know. Although the police were claimed to be an immense cause for the riots, Rothman also articulates the argument that the media was exorbitantly involved, insensibly prejudiced, and inflated the ideas they choose to, while diminishing…

“Are my brothers and dad next?” I questioned myself. July 7th, in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, I walked for miles alongside my fellow brothers and sisters to fight for our rights of justice and freedom. Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile are just two victims of the many police brutalities that has happened in the United States. I live in a place where humans of color are still struggling to find equality.…

On November 24, 2014, only three months after the shooting, the St. Louis County prosecutor's office announced that a grand jury had decided not to indict Officer Wilson in the shooting, setting off a wave of protests in Ferguson (Millitzer et al., 2014, para. 1). Looking at the images of the Ferguson protests appearing on national and cable news networks, including the use of riot gear and tear glass by police, is strangely reminiscent of the images recreated in Selma whereby state troopers, using riot gear, tear gas, and clubs, unleashed brutality on black marchers on the Edmund Pettus…

The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and the use of a chokehold on Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York City are two major events that have added to the growing movement of know as Black Lives Matter, which strives for justice and freedom of the black community. In the case of Michael Brown, where an unarmed black teenager is shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson, a white officer, witness and police testimonies do not align and evidence presented is unable to draw out a clear series of events regarding the incident (New York Times, 2014). Officer Wilson is not indicted. Likewise, in the case of Eric Garner, where his death is caused by a fatal chokehold from Officer Daniel Pantaleo, medical examiners rule Garner’s death as a homicide (Bloom & Imam, 2014). However, since the death is ruled unintentional, Officer Pantaleo is also not…

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

I took one last glance at him and made the decision to leave. What I really wanted was to kick back and enjoy my Friday night, and staying would have inevitably brought more consequences for me. I slowly made my way towards the door, trying to not draw the attention of either the store clerk or the cop, the latter of whom now had the black boy in an uncomfortable position. I had just taken a few steps onto the sidewalk when I heard a painful crunching sound. I spun around and was shocked to see the police officer on top of the boy, his arms handcuffed behind him, just a few feet behind me.…

Introduction In 2012, a young man named Trayvon Martin was gunned down in Florida by neighborhood patroller George Zimmerman. Martin, 17, was unarmed, but because of his “thuggish” and “suspicious” attire, he was killed in cold-blood. When taken to trial, Zimmerman was found not guilty. This case and the unpopular verdict created a racial divide between the nation, or exposed the divide that had already existed.…

Ferguson, Missouri has 21,000 residents, and is primarily white. Of their 53-man police force, only four are black, and according to the U.S. Justice Department, the Ferguson Police has a highly disparate number of black suspects arrested. Thus, questions were quickly raised after the shooting whether biases or prejudices…

Police violence has been an issue in the media, especially after the killing of Michael Brown in the Ferguson area. After this event, many African-Americans took the streets to protest the killing, which resulted in a paramilitary response from the police at the city and state level. The federal government criticized the state tactics related to the use of tear gas, attack dogs, and militarized vehicles on the protestors: “The Justice Department also said that the use of dogs to control crowds incited fear and anger among protesters. It also condemned the use of tear gas without warning” (Bora, 2015, para.5). In this manner, media coverage of this event defines the negative reaction of state police agencies in quelling protests after this…
