Several days before the start of our last year in high school, my neighbor and I divided our time between hunting and surfing to end our summer. I really just wanted to go to the beach, but Johnny refused to give up the precious narrow window of time between the start of deer season and the start of the school year. One day, he came into our house uninvited. He charged into my room with a rifle in his hands to wake me up at five in the morning to sit in the deer stand with him that we had set up in the deep, swampy woods behind our houses. This was a normal occurrence of his, seeing as nobody locked their doors in this little hicktown, especially not my mother.…

I miss them already. Despite the freezing cold snow and the nipping air, we had a lovely Christmas break. As I inspect my child, now grown with children of her own, holding tickets back to their home, longing envelopes me. Hoards of people push past, unaware of my pain, on their own schedules and heading toward different trains, talking and texting on their cell phones. My family boards, time as if in slow-motion, and waves goodbye until I see them again.…

I value winter for not only its activities, snow days, or cheering fires, but above all for its simple, natural beauty. I stop in my step, mesmerized by the painted canvas around me. I feel a tingle inside me as I take in my surroundings. There is the perfect mix of blues, greys and whites as I gaze into the sky amongst the fluffy grey clouds. Amongst this painting in the sky, rings of yellow and pale orange create a precise flickering circle.…
