During my junior year of high school, I had joined track and field but I was out of shape. I was certain my blood was pure gravy and that my body was only powered by hamburgers and milkshakes. When I first went to practice, I was already feeling intimidated by the other runners or just having a “fixed mindset.” Also, the fact that I haven’t actually worked out in a very long time, so that gave me a disadvantage. I was willing to push myself, in order to get better at the sport. It didn’t go so well in the beginning, since I was complaining how I was not fast enough or I didn’t keep up with the fast runners. I was not ready to quit yet; I wanted to prove myself that I can do it and I didn’t need the coaches approval, but more for self success that I …show more content…
When competition day came I was frustrated that I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. I talked to my coach why this was happening and I can perfectly remember what he said, “some people are just gifted and born with those abilities, but they soon get cocky and lose sight of the main purpose; it seems you’re different from that, no offense you don’t have that gift, but you do have the heart to work hard and push yourself, don’t worry about anybody else just worry about yourself getting better.” It was interesting to say that it actually made me push myself further on. Sadly track season ended but I had one more year to prove myself, so I started running hills and waking up early just to get better. When it was time to start track again, I was surprised to see a big improvement. I guess all those hard work actually paid off; there were times where I didn’t reach the time I wanted, but I didn’t complain instead I was pessimistic about the situation. My coach would constantly say his famous quote, “Believe to Achieve”, which would be cliche and short, but it means a lot to

I decided to take action: every day at practice I would try to encourage all of my teammates, despite the different disciplines, even if it was just a simple “good job, man!”, or “keep it up!”. For the warm up each day, I would run with some of the slower people accordingly heartening them, making sure they didn’t feel inadequate compared to track runners who were faster. Little by little, other members of my team replicated my action. Consequently, by the middle of the season, everyone inspirited one another and supported each other. The focus of our pre-meet speeches, which reinforced this newfound reassurance, was family.…

There are several experiences in my life where I have felt that I was treated in an unfair manner, but the most recent of those experiences is the one that occurred to me only months prior to this application. Up until the beginning of November of this year, I used to believe that being a great and successful student would be the most rewarding accomplishment of my senior high career. As a result of this, I unwisely assumed that the most important thing in my life was how well I could do on the next test. I spent a meager amount of my time involved in anything else aside from my homework or studying; expecting to be fairly remunerated for a majority of my hard work. Earlier this year, I was indeed rewarded with an application to National Honors…

I wasn’t a natural by any means, but I knew how to work hard, and when I put in the effort and I could get results. I was in the upper quarter of finishers and finalists, winning some events, losing others. The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…
