A Narrative Essay About Myself In College

Great Essays
Sitting here and looking back on my eighteen years thus far, I don’t even know where to begin. My life has been full of triumph, failure, and everything in between. I have grown from a blonde haired, blue eyed, innocent little girl to a brown haired, hazel eyed, mature young lady. My parents divorced when I was only four years old, resulting in never-ending battles over my brother and I. My closest cousin committed suicide last year and not a single day goes by that I don’t wonder what could I have done to change his mind. Months later, my aunt passed away on the back porch with my three young cousins as witnesses. My family and I have been beat up in recent years but I believe it has brought us closer than ever. I have learned that it is not …show more content…
There is something inside of me that longs for a physical challenge; therefore, sports have always been a prominent aspect of my life. I tried every one offered at my school but never took a particular interest in any of them. Then, one day, I was asked to join the cross country team. The coach told me that as a five foot, six inches, muscular seventh grader, I seemed like the perfect addition to the team. With no other sport currently in season, I had no reason not to give it a chance. Plus, I was one of the few who enjoyed the jogs that we were required to do in conditioning of all other sports, so maybe I would take a liking to cross country. Little did I know, that decision would better my life …show more content…
However, my body was limiting how much I could actually do. I wanted to be back out there with my team regardless of how weak I would look. With peak performance as a runner seemingly out of reach, I focused my energy on the relationships I had formed with my teammates. I needed something to divert my attention from the images of more and more runners passing me by as my injury continued to slow me down. Instead of racing to the finish line, I found myself racing around the course to cheer on my teammates. If my contribution to the team could not be speed, it would be

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. While I’ve always considered running to be my strong suit, learning how to expand my athletic horizons would ultimately be a sign of my growing maturity as I begin the next chapter of my life and 4 years of continued involvement on campus. Throughout high school, being a member of multiple team sports impacted me greatly in a multitude of ways. I clearly remember the first day of high school, after training with my Cross Country team the majority of the summer, I felt that I already knew people with similar interests as me all around my school. In many ways, rowing achieves the same idea. Along with my roommates, and peers attending Madison from my High School, I would have members of the rowing team to fall back on, study with, explore campus life with, and build lasting friendships after my 4 years on campus are complete.…

Running has been apart of my life ever since I can remember, my mom and my grandmother have inspired me so much with this sport. It all started when I won my first race in third grade, that was the moment when I really fell in love with running. My sophomore year of cross country is when my running career came to a stop because of my shin hurting, at first I thought it was just shin splints because I had been running hard for the two weeks prior. Then the pain lasted for three weeks and during that time I was icing and doing all different exercises to strengthen my legs. My coach found out and decided to pull me from our first meet of that season and he made me ride the bike for that week, I was devastated because I was finally training…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

It was a five kilometer race in which the main runners of the race actually ran off-course and had to be led back onto the right course for the race.
