“North Korean guerrillas penetrated the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), so from now on we are declaring the highest level of emergency situation. This is a real situation.” On sunny winter day 2010, we, the South Korean soldiers, got an alert from the superior military office that about three armed soldiers from North Korea had penetrated through the 38th parallel and will soon pass the place where I was. Our captain declared a state of emergency because of the North Korean guerrilla attacks.

In that three seconds, my underwear got soaked from my sweats. We could not hesitate anymore. I instantly fired my K-2 gun toward the suspicious movement in the darkness. My co-soldier started supporting fires. The darkness turned to bright as daytime and also the sound was violent like a thunderstorm. Our fear made us cannot stop firing until our bullets ran short. The forest went back to the darkness and silence. After we were sure that there is no movement anymore, I called to the base camp and noticed about the situation. However, I did not feel safe until the other soldiers came from the base camp. We started to find the corpse or corpses. While I was searching, my mind was full of guilty and complicated. It did not matter to me if it was enemy or not. An experience of killing a human being will make me unhappy entire of my life even though I had to do. After a while, other soldier shouted about finding corpse. There was crushed rocks and burned grass. Next to the crushed rocks, I could see a big and dead boar. It was a wild animal, a wild boar. After realized that it was not a human being, I made a big sigh of relief in my mind. Two weeks later, I got notice from superior military office that North Korean soldiers went back to north, I felt save and also thought they are lucky. They could be the dead boars. I sometimes imagine that if I met the guerillas at that time. Then picture either the North Korean soldier or me and my co-soldier died. After this

Following the liberation of Seoul, South Korea in 1950, Americans were ecstatic about General Macarthur’s long fought and outstanding victory. American and South Korean forces continued to push well beyond the 38th Parallel—the delineation between North and South Korea—towards the Yalu River, the border between North Korea and Chinese Manchuria. In spite of the increasing likelihood of Chinese intervention, American and UN intelligence specialists ignored the possibility. Little did they know, that not only was it feasible, it was imminent. The Marines at the Chosin Reservoir prevailed despite being vastly outnumbered and outmaneuvered while underestimating their capabilities to relinquish security to Chinese and Korean forces by seizing an offensive initiative.…
