Personal Narrative-Stalker Advertising

A few months ago I decided to leave home and rent some office space. I splurged and bought a new office equipment, furniture and general supplies. I’m an avid online shopper and Amazon.com is one of my best friends. However, Amazon can get a little creepy when it decides to stalk me. Over the next month as I settled into the new office, I kept seeing ads for trash cans, binder clips and desk chairs. Amazon was stalking me and was determined that I was going to have a place for my trash, that my papers stayed organized and that I had a place to sit.
Precision
The technical term for stalker ads is ‘retargeting’ or ‘remarketing’ and have been around for several years now. The technology for stalker ads has become rather impressive. If I look at a new pair of shoes online, the same pair of shoes will follow me around for weeks. Retargeting is no longer about figuring out a target market and filtering the ads to reach them. Retargeting is able to grab exactly what I am interested in and follow me around until I make an impulsive purchase.

When I first started in this industry the internet was a novelty. Not all homes had to have computers and there were plenty of awesome email address names available. If I had to promote a company, direct mail was king. I had to cast a broad net and target desired zip codes and hope that it worked. I remember getting excited when technology advanced and I could target specific neighborhoods. From a professional point of view the ability to stalk potential buyers is exciting.
