Personal Narrative: Springboard Diving

Improved Essays
As I stood on the board, I imagined myself soaring through the air, picturing every move I made until sliding into the water as perfectly as I could manage. I competed as a Springboard Diver for six years of my life. Diving helped me realize and strengthen core characteristics about myself that I may never have recognized without participating in this amazing sport. Even though I am no longer a Springboard Diver that does not mean it still does not influence aspects of my every day life. Diving is unique in how it is more mentally taxing than it is physically. Over the years, I’ve competed in many diving meets, but the one I performed best at was the one where I was competing against myself. Late into my diving career I went to a dive meet where I was the only diver in my age bracket. At first, I was disappointed, the point of diving in a meet where I did not have any competition eluded me and I did not understand how it would help me become a better diver. My coach helped me realize that this was a rare opportunity to compete against only myself. At that meet I didn’t worry about how I would place, I didn’t worry about everybody else’s dives, I concentrated on diving better than I have ever before. I ended that meet with the highest score of my diving career, earning …show more content…
Standing backwards on the end of a springboard, ten feet into the air with the majority of your foot hanging off, trying not to think about hitting your face on the board or landing flat on your back takes much more mental strength than the physical strength of actually completing the dive. Diving permanently influenced my ability to push myself harder than ever before, gifting me with the essential ability to push myself past my fears. Not letting fear of what could happen hold me back from the amazing opportunities that present themselves when you push yourself to act in spite of

Simone Manuel talked to reporters saying “I definitely think it raises some awareness and will get them inspired. I mean, the gold medal wasn’t just for me; it was for people that came before me and inspired me to stay in the sport. For people who believe that they can’t do it, I hope I’m an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming. You might be pretty good at it.” She also struggled with pressure from the family, because they all are serious athletes.…

We didn't really know how to ride the Longboard, it looked so easy when she rode it. I was kind of nervous to ride it first so Ava decided to ride it first. She got on with her hands hovering the Longboard and her feet spread apart from each other. Just as she was moving slowly she was actually riding it. I guess this could be pretty easy after all.…

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

After going to these few days of practice, I learned how to do a front jump (forward jump and dive), back jump (backwards dive), and approach (3 steps to the diving board). However, before even starting to dive, I had to face my fear of the fact that I was falling into a pool, whether it be forward or backwards. We tried one technique to get us use to going into the pool backwards; we were to lay head first on top of a folded up tumbling mat, then extend our arms out straight and hold them together at the fingertips as if we were diving in already. Next, we had to keep our legs straight and on the count of three one of our two coaches pushed us in backwards, while the other would watch how we performed the dive from the side. Joining this team, even if it was for less than a week, was one of the best decisions I have ever made.…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
