Personal Narrative: Spring-Feed Pond

Decent Essays
There is a small, spring-fed pond in our neighbor's pasture about 50 yards behind our home. I've never explored the pond, but this summer I got a hint its a healthy environment.

On June 20 I noticed a trail through the dew in our yard. I followed the trail to a large snapping turtle, working its way toward the pond. I figured was a female who had laid her eggs.

On September 12 I was sitting on our porch reading. I looked up to discover this little tike staring up at me. It takes a minimum of nine weeks for snapping turtles to hatch. So its possible this little guy or gal came from the mature snapper's eggs. Since snappers are usually five inches long before they can reproduce, I doubt it was coming back to laying eggs. That said, hatchlings

The hermit set out of camp at midnight, carrying his backpack and his bag of break-in tools, and threaded through the forest, rock to root to rock, every step memorized. Not a boot print left behind. It was cold and nearly moonless, a fine night for a raid, so he hiked about an hour to the Pine Tree summer camp, a few dozen cabins spread along the shoreline of North Pond in central Maine. Food Web Hypothesis

Based on the analysis of the food web, it has been determined that the pond is a healthy and stable ecosystem, although a keystone species is not present. This disproves the hypothesis formed earlier in this lab that stated, “The pond is not ecologically stable and there is no keystone species. The pond does not seem to be biodiverse, and the relative population sizes of the organisms appears to be low, based on visual observations. A keystone species also does not appear to be present, or else it’s population is low, and dying out, meaning the ecosystem is collapsing.” Although it has been determined that a keystone species is not present, and the hypothesis also states that, the explanation and reasoning in the hypothesis is invalid.…

As Canadians manipulate natural habitats for farmland development and urbanization, the consideration for wildlife management of species including the Blanding’s Turtle becomes increasingly important. Recognized as an umbrella species, the Blanding’s Turtle may be a representative animal for its habitat and therefore monitoring its health may assist in selecting appropriate conservation strategies. Recognizing the decline in the size of many Blanding’s Turtle populations, several studies have investigated the behaviour and life-history of this species to better understand the factors threatening its existence. In a study monitoring the movement patterns of freshwater turtles, Gibbons (1986) noted that excursions by females for suitable nesting…

It has been said that the only thing that stays the same is that everything changes. That statement may or may not be entirely true depending on how a person defines the word everything. For some people everything is literally everything, and for other people, everything simply means anything. To a few Jasper County men, their teenage years spent on the hot and dusty road that lead to Clear Water pond was everything to them. Looking back on Jasper County, it is clear that time does really have a way of changing everything.…

When I was ten years old, I moved to West Texas. I loved swimming in the lakes and ponds around my home before, so I was disappointed when I found out that there was only one body of water near my new home. This “lake” (about the size of a football field) was called Clearwater Lake. It took about an hour’s time to drive there. The first time my family drove over there, I was amazed by how many people there were, all the cars packed liked sardines, the people moving so slowly it was like molasses.…

Theodore Roosevelt said it best when he stated, “The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others.” While my future career goal is to become a registered nurse and has little to do with the environment, I have made many initiatives into the study of conservation and environmental sciences. For the past two years, I have attended Massanutten Regional Governor’s School for Integrated Environmental Science and Technology; there I studied English, Statistics, Calculus, Geology, Agro-Ecology, and Agriculture Policy. I was able to learn in depth the logistics of the environment, climate change, and importance of conservation.…
