The image that is hard to get out of my head is how tired, unhealthy, and curved my back was. Life seemed like it was constantly about Doctors’ appointments or Specialists, and because of all the appointments I missed a lot of school, I confess I was always tired and I spent a lot of time in bed. My story really begins in February 2012 when I had spinal cord surgery at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. When I was young it was scoliosis was detected, but in February the curve in my spine was at 47 degrees, they sent me for an MRI. The results were not good, it showed I had a tethered cord, surgery was scheduled in a rush and performed within a few days. This surgery was very scary because they were operating on my spinal cord, I was told to be prepared for the possibility that I be paralyzed! When I woke up in recovery I saw bright lights and I automatically thought I had died! I was mumbling “Not now Memaw I’m not ready to go to heaven”! The nurse said it is okay honey you …show more content…
We were all happy, mom loved her job and we loved where we were living, but things were about to change because when I went for my 15 month check-up my curve was at 57 degrees. My Orthopedic Doctor in Seattle Dr. Krengel always said that at 50 degrees it is intended for surgery to be done immediately. Unfortunately Dr. Neal the Orthopedic in Jacksonville didn’t have any openings for surgery until October or November and with my curve growing so fast, the surgery needed to be done as soon as possible. When we spoke to Dr. Krengel in Seattle he told my family if we came back to Seattle he would schedule me for surgery in August, my family discussed everything and decided that mom would quit her job, I have to tell you her boss was really mad, he couldn’t understand why we had to move. We gave up our home and moved back to

Yale New Haven Hospital's medical unit diagnosed me with S.C.F.E.: Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis. This injury, usually in the event of a fall, causes the head of the hip to slip backwards at the point of connection between the bone and growth plate. The doctor told me that I was very lucky; Most cases are to be diagnosed within 24 to 48 hours, and extended use of the leg outside of this time frame could result in lost flexibility of the joint, in addition to premature osteoarthritis. Based on my circumstances, being 504 hours outside the regular diagnosis time and partaking in a very rigorous schedule of physical activities, I should’ve been a lost cause.…

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…
