I’m not exactly sure when this happened but I know it was during the first semester. One day me and Jeannet just got out off our math class and we were walking to our spanish class. We both notice a new girl standing by our spanish class trying to figure out where she was suppose to be. Many students were going in and out of that class, by where she was standing but nobody was trying to help her and she was not asking for help. I wanted to help her but because she did not ask, I was not going to say anything. But Jeannet walked to her and asked her if she needed any help then she looked up her schedule and walked with her to her classroom. It takes courage to walk to someone you do not know and offer to help.

I Believe As I took the small child’s hand in my own and looked into her fearful eyes, a connection was formed between us which required neither words nor condition. As her mother sat down, the girl ran to her, hiding in her lap as the doctor began to talk. I gleaned bits from their rapid Spanish: “Mi niña no quiere comer,” which translates to “My child does not want to eat.” I looked back to the frail, frightened child, her face still concealed in her mother’s lap.…

As I get off the bus from the long day of school, I head on over to the building ahead of me to now start with the next task in my day, tutoring. The school year had just begun a short while ago and I had to juggle the responsibilities of a new job and school work for the first time. Walking into the school, I saw the familiar faces of kids I worked with before when I previously volunteered on my free time. Once I settled into a classroom to start, students came in with their books and started to work away at their homework. All but one of the faces seemed familiar, so I checked to see who the new student was.…

For almost two decades I have known that I wanted to be a doctor. However, seven years ago I I decided that I wanted to be fluent in Spanish so that I may treat those whose first language is Spanish. While volunteering at the New York Hospital of Queens, I got to experience first hand a Hispanic family who spent approximately 12 hours in a waiting room due to the language barrier. I have seen patients before waiting for a long period of time, but this was the longest. In that moment, I felt sympathy for that family.…

I grew up in a household that did not allow me to exert and utilize my ability to speak Spanish. Although my parents speak spanish, english was my first and primary language. The fact that I am Mexican and did not grow up speaking Spanish made it difficult to have a connection with my Mexican culture and establish an identity that was unique to me. This reality made it very confusing when constructing my identity. I did not know which culture I belonged with, the American or Mexican culture.…

Family can be annoying until you realize they are not. As a young girl, I remember the uneasiness that would wash over me whenever I had to speak Spanish with my family. My flushed cheeks were testament to my lack of proficiency. My family constantly picked out the words I mispronounced or misplaced in my sentences. Oftentimes, my grandparents would give me an ultimatum: to speak Spanish or not to speak at all.…
