Personal Narrative: South End Neighborhood

Great Essays
I am always impressed by a woman who can assert herself and not shy away from adversity regardless of the outcome. I am equally impressed by a woman who can use those attributes to champion for the safety and welfare of others who do not. Heather is such a person . . .

I first met Heather when I was invited to volunteer for the South End Neighborhood Association. She had been there since its inception and I recall sitting and watching several other members as I am prone to do . . . watch people that is. That particular meeting’s agenda had some concerns that needed attention and while members voiced their opinions and possible solutions, Heather’s voice, gumption and frankness stood out with me. It has been that way ever since.

If research on the development of a child’s temperament and how a child’s surroundings influence his/her future behaviors, beliefs and abilities to survive holds any weight at all – it can definitely be true in the case of this individual.

We sat together recently and I asked Heather if she would share with me a part of her childhood, where she was born, siblings, parents,

She attended Job Corps in Bangor and met her future husband, Ralph there. From that experience, the two headed south to Central Maine where they held different jobs until she settled into a career as a CNA and Ralph became a professional painter. They have one son. Together they have volunteered hundreds perhaps thousands of hours to the community they live in and the city at large . . . to name a few: Mid Maine Homeless Shelter, Warming Center, United Way, Soup Kitchen, Boy Scouts, Hospice, KVCAP board as a representative of a segment of the city’s society, donated knitted hats (150 and counting) and of course SENA. She wrote, “Throughout my involvement, I hope one thing shines through that it is my goal to make a difference in the lives of others and somehow enhance their situation by just being

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Hi, Stephanie. I can’t tell you how much I loved, and agreed with, how you described and assessed Lamott’s writing style! I found each essay in Traveling Mercies fused wisdom with humor. Her writings have made it unequivocal how surviving life’s little obstacles is possible for anyone. Lamott loses her dad and closest acquaintance to cancer, contracts bulimia, becomes an alcoholic, and gives birth with no one around to help her care for the child.…

From creating the Virginia Nurses Association to spreading her knowledge all over she will impact me in the near future. Instead of only working in hospital she took her nursing to homes where people could not afford to go to the hospital. She always provided care to people no matter what the situation is and she goes above and beyond the call of duty. Not helping was never an option for Sadie. We nurses should always provide the best care we can.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

Growing up in one of the poorest regions of the United States has taught me two things; one, we are not defined by stereotypes, and two, hardships are made to be overcome. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Middlesboro, KY sits on the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. The multicolored fall foliage and the vivid green mountains in the spring are disserved by the descriptor spectacular. My roots are firmly nestled in the Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone started his journey to the West decades ago. I am proud to call myself an Appalachian-American.…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

How to Survive on the Streets When I lost my job, I was forced to leave my accommodation and became homeless in a matter of minutes. With no family to turn to, I ended up on the streets. Having lost my job due to misunderstanding (I think my job was a massive homophobe), I was unable to pay bills and rent, leading to my eviction from my apartment in 2013. I ended up living on the streets for a lengthy period of time. Drawing was how I passed my time.…

I wish I could see Mrs. Hawley again! She was my 3rd grade teacher when I attended Mary Bethune Elementary. I know that was a very long time ago from now, but she was by far one of my favorite teachers. I last saw her when I was in the 7th grade because I didn’t graduate from 8th grade at Mary Bethune. I first left Mary Bethune after 4th grade because I was recommended to go to Wade Park Elementary and take honors courses.…

Today I am going to talk, in very abridged form, a little bit about my experience of getting to know the amazing person who goes by the name of Cecilia Bernard, and what I have learned about her over the past three years of knowing her, which was both a fortunate and unfortunate event. Fortunate, obviously, because I got to meet her and see everything great about her. Unfortunate, though, as it took me as long as it did to meet her. What I first learned about her is that she was very open and inviting. I found this out on the way to New Orleans.…
