Personal Narrative-Some Call Of Duty-Esque Games

When I was little(mostly while living in Southern Illinois), we owned what would now be considered a dinosaur of a computer. I loved that computer, and I would play videogames constantly. We had Pandora’s Box(a puzzle game) and Riddle of the Sphinx(My mom is the only one who has figured out at least some of the mystery). Some Call of Duty-esque games (that I somehow understood and liked to play when I was three) and, ironically, Candyland(which I still play today even though it originally came in a glorious cereal box which carried all of my hopes and dreams in a tiny CD), along with many assorted games related to television shows. Most importantly though, Nancy Drew games.

Nothing compares to the crappy animation and the somehow terrifying but intriguing plotlines of the old games. I remember being scared of all the secret stairways. I remember the alluring artwork that went into all of the rooms in the game. I remember “When the four sided box loses its border,” and “When the bird of fire can see again.” I remember when I first found the key in the bedpost, using the paint chipper to pry off the top, and then using that same paint chipper to scrape tiles off of the ceiling, discovering the secret door that we would later access via key that we may or may not have found in a bedpost(my sister and I still say, “Quick! Look in the bedposts!” whenever we are in a victorian house). I also remember never being able to beat the game. We now have a separate computer that we use to play Message in a Haunted Mansion(and another that we use for the newer games), and still I have yet to get to the end. I know that I have finished it, but it was so long ago that I probably

Horror is a genre that seizes a reader and plunges them into a fictional world created by the author’s grotesque, dark imagination. The author forms this gripping world through layers of theme, literary structure, and other captivating elements and symbols. In We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, the author uses these elements in a profound and sophisticated manner, leaving the reader chilled to the bone without quite grasping how or why. Jackson creates an unsettling work of subtle suspense and horror through an unreliable narrator, witchcraft, and isolation. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is narrated by a troubled and mentally ill adolescent, Mary Katherine Blackwood.…

It was a way they had fun and stayed active whilst doing so. For middle-aged generations, games moved into the living room where families gathered to spend time with each other. Modern games or more accurately, video games, are not played like this anymore. For one, video games are not played outside. They are played inside, on a television screen.…

One game that ties these elements together is Rugrats: Search for Reptar is a PlayStation game that was released in 1998.The game is based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats, which aired from 1991 until 2004. The game follows the main character of the cartoon, Tommy Pickles, who has lost his Reptar puzzle (IMDb). The last time I recall playing the game was twelve years ago at the age of nine. In order to get a good understanding of the game again I watched a walkthrough of someone else playing the game. The semantics of the title of the game did not mean much, but as soon as I heard the diegetic sound of the theme song, it called my attention because immediately all my childhood memories of the game came back.…

Ever since I can remember video games have always been my escape. On my ninth birthday I received my xbox 360 and since that day I have never look back. With my xbox I have made memories and friendships that will last life a life time. Although some believe things in life are either good or bad, it can be seen through Xbox that things are both good and bad, but it’s the proportion between good and bad that matters, this can be seen through new games, finishing games, and new systems that proves that a disproportionate amount of good versus bad creates good memories. With the Xbox there were many games that I have played that have taken me on hundreds of adventures.…

As a counter-argument, the games allowed for me to explore the world Tolkien created for myself and from many different viewpoints. The most memorable was a game titled Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II. My mom, who probably regrets this now, bought this game from my brother and I for our computer a little while after I had finished the Lord of the Rings books and movies. I spent a large amount of time playing this strategy game where you would control battalions of different factions of Middle-Earth in many of the iconic locations. I enjoyed this game more than a kid my age might because I was able to play as the valiant Men of Gondor, wonderful Elves, tough dwarves, ferocious orcs, or pesky little goblins.…
