I evoke waking up every 5 minutes checking my blue IPod to see the time. Every time I woke up I would look outside my gelid, frosted window and see the sky darken to a faint violent. As the sky lightens, I would awaken even more. Just as the clock hit 7:30 A.M. sharp my alarm went off, “beep, beep, beep” desiring that I had gotten more sleep. I had opened my eyes like I had 50 cups of coffee, and jumping out of bed like a deer running from its predator.…

When I am dreaming, I sometimes am not sure if I am awake or dreaming, but when I am awake I know I am not dreaming. In dreams, I feel like I am not in control of what is happening, I am the observer. I sometimes know I am dreaming because I do things I would not normally do in real life. In dreams, things do not always make sense, like a movie skipping. In real life, this is not the case.…

As a child, my parents shaped me into their ideal image of a little girl. The formation of their ideals actually started long before I first opened my eyes in the hospital. My story began back in 1988, when my parents met while working at Walt Disney World as cultural exchange workers from Canada. Their romance is a fairy tale. They had their first date at the Magic Kingdom, they spent all their days off on a Florida beach, and they experienced the technical magic that Disney is so well-known for.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

In August of 2011, I was eleven; my older sister Kyle, 18 at the time, was arrested with six felony charges: three theft and three check fraud. Over the past year, she had been stealing money and forging checks: cashing them and getting money to support her drug addiction. In October, she was released to a halfway house in Elizabeth and stayed there for 90 days. Later, in 2012, she was arrested again for the same charges. At that time I was thirteen and barely understood why my sister would do this.…

The Luxury of Childhood It was a bright and sunny Monday morning; a sermon was playing on the car radio though we were not paying so much attention because we were lost in our thoughts. My uncle was driving to work and was going to drop me and my four-year-old cousin, who was sitting in her car seat with a bowl of fruit loops in her laps, in school. This Monday morning, like every other morning, I was reflecting on my day and week, checking in my head for assignments and readings to make sure I had not left anything out.…

I’ve always had the impression that fairytales were innocent stories of finding true love and living happily ever after, like the way Disney depicted them to be. I never thought about where these stories came from and the different themes and symbols that were relevant of that time. Some of the things I’ve learned about fairytales have not only shocked me, but has also made me reevaluate everything I know about fairytales. Something I never knew about fairytales is that they weren’t always for children. I’ve always associated them with a younger audience so thinking that these stories were written for adults enjoyment is really crazy to believe.…
