On October, 20th our grade slept in cardboard boxes for one whole day! Basically, we wanted to feel like how homeless people feel like everyday. Before the night we slept in cardboard boxes we built our homes out of cardboard. Continue with the rest of the steps first. Building Your Test Houses OK, this will be messy, but fun! You can build any shape of houses that you want, but keep in mind that you will need to build 12 of them, they should all be exactly the same, and they must fit inside your trays. First, spread out some butcher paper or newspaper to make cleanup a little easier.…

The few things that I disliked was that each student was put into a group and put into an area in the home, I didn’t like the fact that we stayed in the same area for the whole week we have been there for, with the same people all the time. I advise next time to swap to different areas of the house to further experience all aspects and…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

There’s a little slice of Heaven in Marshall, Texas, where the sun shines through the pines and the sound of cicadas serenade you throughout your afternoon and the lake shines like a plate of polished silver in the early morning sun. When I first came to Camp Fern, I was on my own. Everyone else had known each other for at least two years, so I was the odd one out. In my cabin there was the usual sort. There was the popular one, the attention seeker, the joker, and the one you love to hate.…

When turning in the reseet it was over $50 all together so I am unable to get individual cash for each person. I will be able to if each of you give me your box numbers and ID numbers. I know that is important information but it would make the proses much easier. Instead of putting all the resets into my name and dispersing the money after cashing the full check, we would all get individual checks in the mail for the exact amount we spent for the club.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off, and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, the frigid wind sends my nose running. Walking towards the back door of the school, I grasp the cold metal handle, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustom to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated backstage area.…

An art project at the local Essex High School is raising people’s awareness about homelessness in Burlington, Vermont. Madeleine Hatoun, a senior graduating from Essex High School, and its Academy of Visual and Performing Arts completed this project as community outreach requirement. She was influenced by Gregor Kloehn, an artist from Oakland, California, who built tiny homes out of recycled materials for homeless people. Hatoun was also inspired by how homelessness can affect anyone, including children. She built small houses to raise people’s consciousness about homelessness.…

It is a well known fact that living in San Francisco is expensive. Apartment rent in a decent 1 or 2 berooms in a good neighborhood costs fortune, there are tons of nice but expensive restaurants and all the nice small and unique boutiques sell three digits and four digits shoes and dresses. Just walk out to embarcadero on saturday, and some organic fruits alone would cost $3-$4/lb, and gasoline price already high in nation, higher yet within california skyrockets to highest in the city. And, yet there are nice houses, well maintained, and owner occupancy too. How does one do that?…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
