Personal Narrative: Single-Parent Home

Decent Essays
I come from a single-parent household, where my mother raised my brother and myself. My father was not financially supportive or present during my upbringing. There were times when we my mother had to use resources from other family members, and public assistance to cover the household expenses. When I was in college I had to depend on loans, grants, and I worked to cover my personal expenses, because I did not want to burden my mother. Consequently, I was not able to intern and I did not have the time or financial resources to consistently participate in the extracurricular activities.
During our country’s economic crisis in 2010, shortly after graduation, my job at Jenny Craig was reduced from 30 hours to 10 hours per week. Furthermore

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

Growing up in a single parent household, I have faced many trials and tribulations. One of these trials and tribulations was growing up in a low income family with limited opportunities. I was a bright, productive student, in 9th grade year I tried my hardest, even in math and science, to make my freshman year the best and most productive; I got good grades, joined the track team and got a job. But then during my 10th through 11th grade years I began to experience verbal and mental abuse at the hand of a family member. At one point I had run away from home to get away from my problems.…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

The Person I have chosen to write this forum on is my mother. I grew up in a home where her parenting style was very authoritative. This has strongly made an impact on my life and how I am perceived by my friends and others. My mother was very consistent with boundaries however; she was always open to discussion. My mother had furthered her education in child and family services and therefore, implemented many skills in our home.…

I will be the first to say that I am pretty lucky that I have not faced a difficult challenge in life that has stopped me from loving the people I love. Therefore, writing about this may be a little challenging for myself. However, one major change in my life that could have affected me more than it did is the divorce of my parents. When I was 12 years old, I was faced with big news that was frightening. The hardest part was having just my father break the news to me because my mother wanted to wait.…

July 2013, during my junior year of high school, my family and I moved to the United States. At that time, school was about to start and in order to enroll us in school, my parents had to provide proof of residency. We rented a really nice house in suburban Atlanta, while we started house searching. We didn't find any houses that fit our budget or were suitable for us, so we put off searching for a while.…

It is a well known fact that living in San Francisco is expensive. Apartment rent in a decent 1 or 2 berooms in a good neighborhood costs fortune, there are tons of nice but expensive restaurants and all the nice small and unique boutiques sell three digits and four digits shoes and dresses. Just walk out to embarcadero on saturday, and some organic fruits alone would cost $3-$4/lb, and gasoline price already high in nation, higher yet within california skyrockets to highest in the city. And, yet there are nice houses, well maintained, and owner occupancy too. How does one do that?…

Consistency was something I always lacked in my home life. At the time of my parents’ separation, I had yet to form a memory of us as a family. Throughout my childhood, my time was split between two households. Traveling between two homes made it difficult for me to maintain friendships and develop a sense of comfort in either household. My voice was often overshadowed by constant disagreement among family members.…
