Personal Narrative: Silver Falls

Brian had the whole day planned. He told me not to question anything and just go along with everything. The morning came and he left to run errands. He told me to stay in bed and rest, but I couldn’t, I was too excited. I got up, took a shower and got ready for a hike. He returned about an hour later with donuts for breakfast and lunch from croissant and company. He told me we were going to Silver Falls, a special place for us.
Six months prior at his dental cleaning I informed him that I had never been to Silver Falls. He mentioned that if our circumstances were different he would like to take me. The next day I sent him a message with the two words, Silver Falls. A bold move but one I will never regret. He took me for a hike at Silver Falls the first week we began dating. And on that hike we both knew that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together.
We got in the car and hit the road. Brian had a playlist of love songs to listen to on the drive. At one point I started crying because I just felt so much love for him and I couldn’t believe that such a

At that lunch we both knew we had strong feelings for each other. He had coordinated with the staff to have a special table reserved with a huge bouquet of flowers. The staff was so excited for us; we were welcomed with hugs and smiles. As we sat and ate Brian told me about all of the coordinating had done to make this day special. He told me had a photographer at Bush Park to take pictures of the proposal. He had Nadine the cookie shop owner deliver the flowers to Gamberetti’s. He had Scott from work help him move the bench at Bush Park so I would not have to walk through the soggy grass. Brian included all of the things that were special to us on our engagement day. Every time I go running at Bush Park I see our bench where he proposed and I am reminded of our engagement. I will always love

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

Being born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, I have been afforded the privilege of witnessing the Great Falls of Paterson my whole life. I have visited the Great Falls many times throughout my life. When I was young with my parents, whether it was for a day in the sun or for a festival. I grew up appreciating this magnificent work of nature, I also took a part in cleaning up the falls, both as a volunteer and as a member of the Paterson Youth Council and Urban Youth Corps. I have brought my family to the falls to help with the clean ups, from my sisters, to my cousins, to my youngest nephews, and those memories stick to me to this day.…

I start my trip from the location of frenzied outfitting activity throughout the 1840s and early 1850s, Independence (Missouri) was the jumping-off point for the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. The town includes several historic buildings, monuments and Independence Spring. As the place of convergence of early routes from the Mississippi Valley, this square was the last significant point of supply until the mid-1840s, when Westport also became an outfitting town. When I visited Independence in 1846, I found, "a great Babel of African slaves, indolent dark-skinned Spaniards, profane and dust-laden bullwhackers going to and from Santa Fe with their immense wagons, and emigrant families bound for the Pacific, all cheerful and intent on their embarkation…

Our first of many stops lead us to the movie theater to watch a movie that he had been dying to see at the time.…

Twelve years into our marriage, Shawn and I made a trip to the ever so beautiful Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Since we had never even been on a honeymoon, this trip was a well needed vacation from the hustle and bustle of our everyday activities. The plane ride seemed to take forever. Once we landed and walked off the plane, the hot and humid ocean air hit us. I loved the airport; it was like a giant tiki hut, open to the outdoors!…

Thinking back on this day, the phone call I got from my wife is among the most surprising messages I’ve received. The kids had been begging for a dog for years, but as I have had many dogs during my childhood, I remember the heartache when they were gone. I didn’t want my young children to experience that, so I told them no time and time again. However, when I saw their faces, I had to rethink. I can’t imagine how different my life would have been if I had given a different answer.…
