The sun peeks out from behind the solemn clouds, a reminder of light on a dark day, sneaking up and glittering off the windows of the cars that speed past us. I patter next to you quickly, my sore feet barely covered by the warmed faux leather flats I wear, a thin barrier between my skin and the rough concrete beneath, and my legs are bare, showing the immense amount of sun exposure I receive. I have always been extreme, black or white, ecstatic or depressed, a perfect picture of radicality, the epitome of ‘go hard or go home.’ My struggle is forever with intensity, for I have lived a life of polar opposites, not bothering to try to understand those on the other side. How can two things so diametrically opposed possibly exist in harmony? I’ve always believed if we are not the same then we are antithetical, we cannot understand each other when we are so impossibly different. But no, perhaps opposites can understand each other.
