Personal Narrative: Shrek Jr.

I enjoy performing in shows, but it takes a lot of courage. Especially the musical "Shrek Jr." I was in. First of all, I had to try out to even be in the show. It was literally a room filled with people judging me. Secondly, I had a terrifying allergic reaction to strawberries right before the show. Lastly, I had to perform in front of a live crowd. The crowd was gigantic and the worse part is that they were all paying attention to me! Therefore, Being in the musical “Shrek Jr.” was a very courageous act that I have completed. Little did I know, it turns out I had developed an allergy for strawberries! The next day I got a few hives. Two days later, my body was covered in hives. On that exact night I had to go to the emergency room because my throat was starting to close. Luckily, I was given a lot of medication. Sadly, I didn’t get home until 3:00 in the morning and I had to perform that day! Courageously, I went to school that day and performed in front of the school hours after I almost stopped breathing. Performing in front of a live crowd is incredibly courageous! Especially when you have one of the lead rules. Hundreds of people have their eyes on you. That is when you really start thinking about the embarrassment of messing up. It’s worse than the judges judging you because there’s a lot more people staring at you. Most of them expect you to do an amazing job and you just don’t want to let the people down. In conclusion, performing in the show “Shrek Jr.” was a courageous act that I have completed. In the first place, you have to try out to even be in the musical. Secondly, I had a dangerous allergic reaction to strawberries. Additionally, I had to go to the emergency room because of it. Lastly, but not least, I had to perform in front of a live crowd. You always think about messing up and disappointing the audience. Even though performing takes a lot of courage, it is also quite

Personally, I think my constant strive to be better at what I love to do says a lot about me and shows my determination. My parents have always said the talent will only get you so far and that hard work and dedication is what will get you all the way. Being a part of theater for about 5 years now has also taught me a lot about empathy and working as a team. Learning how to embody and live as someone else for just a little while has made me a more empathetic person outside of the theater and made me more understanding to those who live differently than I do or have different beliefs and values. Rehearsing and performing with the same group of people for 4 weeks to even a few months can bring people quite close.…

The first time I performed on stage, I was the opening act for Elvis Presley. I was five years old and my family was staying at an inn for the weekend. In the building’s lounge, there was a small stage on which musicians and comedians would perform at night. On that particular night, an Elvis impersonator was scheduled to sing, but he was running late. Naturally, I ran up to the stage, dragging along my brother and cousin to be my backup dancers.…

This achievement meant more than performing at the festival; it taught me valuable lessons as well. I learned a lesson I would never have learned were I to get in on the first try. Now, when I face an obstacle, I know not to give up because that would get rid of all hope of accomplishing my goals. I have also learned that failure and criticism are very important parts of the learning practice of life. Now I am more open to receive criticism now and to use it to improve myself, rather than to discourage…

I never expected to be interested in the backstage atmosphere of a production, however, I found myself helping my school’s drama department put on our annual Harvest King. I would not say I was the stage manager, but I would say that I was very involved in making sure the show went on smoothly. I was to make sure each contestant was ready to go on stage at their proper time, whether it was for on-stage question, evening wear, or talent. Keeping each boy on task was no small feat due to the fact that they were all high school age. I had never expected to find myself backstage at any kind of production, especially not my school’s boys pageant.…

I was the stage manager and a performer in two sections of the show. I needed to make sure that everyone had their music, choreography or act ready before rehearsal. I also had to make sure that what ever they wear was school appropriate, even if the outfit was from the original part of that culture. I still sure things were still happening even if I couldn’t be at a certain time and place for illness reasons. I don’t tolerate anything with less effort, especially when it comes to the main projects I have in…

"You just didn't have a sparkle in your eye. " Only a few weeks after my seventeenth birthday, I sat in front of a panel of adults I had once adored as they told me why they had crushed my lifelong dream. For obvious reasons, I did not like the answer. My entire life I had dedicated to performing- singing, dancing, and acting. I always had a desire to be a star someday, and when I was awarded the voice scholarship at my high school and given featured roles in the musical every year, I thought my opportunity to be a star was finally within reach.…

I cannot remember a moment of my life where theatre has not been important for me. Being involved from a young age, I was destined to be on stage. It was not until I entered high school when I realized how difficult theatre can be; actors cannot go on stage without understanding the play, designers cannot outline anything without the proper information, and a director cannot direct without a grasp on the themes and ideas of the show. It all comes down to the research for the production. Without this literacy practice of research, no one can put on the literacy event of a performance.…

Reminiscing back on the beginning of the season, I could see how terrified I had been. Although I was just in the ensemble, the pressure was still on my shoulders to perform to my best ability. Learning the dances and poses for A Thousand Cranes, I had followed the seniors exactly, right down to the way they curled their fingers or pointed their toes. I was petrified that if I did not do something precisely, I would be called out in front of the whole…

Perhaps you’re thinking of joining a theatre crew. You spent much of your childhood attending plays while getting captivated by the fantasy being brought to life before your very eyes and now you want to become part of it. While it is true that most who are in the theatre did join for this very reason, there are some points where the similarities of watching and participating detour into major differences. I preface this with a brief glimpse into my background. First off, I was not an actor.…

My First Dance Competition The first time I performed at a dance competition was a very exciting and memorable moment for me. I was six years old and insanely nervous. Typically the nerves hit me while I wait in the wing of the stage for my name to be called, but this time it began the moment I woke up in the morning. I remember having to wake up at about six in the morning in order to have time to get ready and be at the convention center in Wichita when the doors opened at 7:30 a.m.…
