Personal Narrative: Should Drivers Be A Defensive Drive?

Improved Essays
I've always heard that drivers should practice "defensive driving." It makes sense, we all know how big a car is and how fast it can go, you can find all of those numbers somewhere on the car itself. We all know someone who has been in an accident, be it minor or major. When cars collide, it can be catastrophic and everyone knows it well. But somehow, at least for me, the idea of it actually all being real didn't happen until I had gotten into an accident where I was forced to deal with the consequences of even a minor collision. Standing in the sun that late afternoon with a bunch of my friends and the whole street staring at me and my dented car while the other driver yelled at me taught me a valuable lesson about just how real the ramifications of not being a defensive …show more content…
The thought of getting behind the wheel seemed like far too much responsibility. While waiting for my mom to drive me anywhere was a somewhat aggravating loss of freedom, I felt I needed more time before I went back to piloting heavy machinery. I felt obligated to act almost as I had when I was first getting my license- I even spent awhile only driving with one of my parents in the passenger seat. At first, I was screaming internally from the moment I put the key in the ignition to the moment I parked it at my destination. Changing lanes made me very anxious, I saw all cars as threats (actually I still do), and unprotected left hand turns came close to actually frightening me. Soon enough though, I felt like I was able to drive alone. I had mastered the art of "defensive driving"- it's a shame it took me getting into a minor accident to actually understand it, but I'm glad it was a lesson I actually learned instead of just having it go in through one ear and out the other as it had the first time. I'm now quite confident in my driving abilities, and if I'm not, I take the long way around. Better safe than sorry when it comes to

I remembered when I first started driving on freeway by myself. Before that, I had experiences driving on local streets or on freeway with my family, but I had never done that by myself. Now everywhere I go, no matter how late I’m running, I always drive the speed limit and focus on just the road. I never swerve for animals, I even hit a squirrel the other day! When I drive my mindset is different, I think about the people on the road driving and the importance of their life. I think about how they have families and people who love them. After having my permit for over a year, my mom decided it was time for me to take Drivers Ed, and thus, I could no longer avoid driving. While I certainly didn't think so at the time, this ended up being a good thing for me. Once I had no other choice but to drive, driving became a thing I no longer feared, but something that was enjoyable. It was just a learning process that I was too scared to start, but once started it wasn’t as scary as it seemed. Once I got over my fear of driving, I really tried to apply the idea of doing things even when I’m scared to other aspects of my life.…

I had just clocked out of work late one night and stepped out the back door into the dark alley. The air was crisp and nipped at my nose as I walked through the freshly fallen snow to my car. The snow still streaming down from the sky made the wind seem completely white. I turned on my car and then my windshield wipers to the highest setting, nevertheless I could not see as I pulled out of the alley. As I rounded the corner my car slid to the right across the road.…

They know it is mandatory to have a driver license since they drive to work or to school every day; however, that is without mentioning the people that someone else takes to such places. When someone requests a DL, that person goes through a process of practice and examination in order to be able to have one. Most of them pass the examinations and practices, and they become a licensed driver for the State they reside in. Obviously, a good driver is not the one that has received a driver license, but the one that drives defensively. These strategies can only be learned in several…

As I begin to transition into adulthood, I realize where some of my passing points were on my road to being considered an adult. The first point I remember is when I was finally allowed to drive the truck around our land by myself. When I was eight or nine, I learned how to drive. Of course, this was just in an empty field, never surpassing ten miles per hour. Dad would take me out to practice every once and awhile, but at this point I never dreamed of driving by myself.…

The one teen I know of is me, I’m 19 and don’t have my driver’s licenses. Some of my family members have gotten in one or more car accidents in my lifetime and that also scares me. Another reason why I am so afraid of driving is because I grew up in a small town with no stop lights, a few stop signs, and very little traffic.…
