Personal Narrative: Ship-Trap Island

The Arrival There have been many reports on an island, often visited by hunters, regarding cannibalism. In this news article, these concerns, as well as secrets, will be addressed. I will share my adventure to the Ship-Trap Island. I had originally planned to travel to Rio on September 5th through September 12th. A perspicacious and experienced hunter named Rainsford accompanied me. It was nighttime when I first spotted land of any sort. It was vaguely visible and was opaque, even Rainsford couldn’t see it. Utterly tired, I began drifting off, dreaming of the adventures we were soon to face. A few minutes in, I was awakened by a thundering sound. I rushed to the deck where Rainsford was, and we met eyes. It sounded like 3 shots had been …show more content…
The sleep had given me new vigor, but a sharp hunger still picked at me. I went to scavenge for something to eat before Rainsford woke up. After about an hour or two, I managed to gather a handful of berries, a raw egg, and some leaves. I went back to the place where we had slept, but Rainsford wasn’t there; he was over by an enormous building. He knocked on it and a droll creature with a long black beard came out. He seemed intimidating, and it looked like he was pointing a gun at Rainsford! I ran closer to the scene to see what was going on. Another man showed up at the door when I got over there. After he and Rainsford exchanged words, Rainsford went inside the building. I ran over to the building and leaned in to listen in on their conversation. I found out that the handsome man was named General Zaroff who seemed to a cultivated and an affable man. He solicitously asked Rainsford about his hunting experience and his history. One thing that bothered me was that his uncanny knowledge of hunting and his zealously in finding what he called “a bigger prey”. As the conversation went on, I realized that the General hunted men! I knew there was something suspicious from the beginning, but I didn’t think he was a murderer! I knew then and there that it was imperative that Rainsford escaped. I quietly fell asleep on the back of the building. I woke up to the sound of voices- one of them being Rainsford. …show more content…
I realized then that this would be the end of both of us. Just as I was about to surrender, Rainsford slid down the tree. I looked behind to see a strange man leading the dogs. I heard Rainsford mumble “Ivan” under his breath and so I assumed that it must’ve been the man’s name. Rainsford suddenly attached his knife to a springy tree branch and launched it. He then sprinted at full speed and I, therefore, struggled to keep up, for I had low stamina. When the sound of hounds stopped, I figured that the knife must have reached him. Rainsford and I did not stop running until we reached the cliff by sea. To elude General Zaroff, he jumped in, and without a second thought, I did so as well. Before I knew it, we reached the shore where we had first arrived. He hurried in the enormous building and went to General Zaroff’s bedroom (where I stayed in the bathroom in fear of getting

In the pitch black of the night, Rainsford fell off his yacht into the dark ocean, and “Desperately he struck out with strong strokes after the receding lights of the yacht, but he stopped before he had swum fifty feet. A Good Rewrite is Hard to Find In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the thrilling story of a skilled hunter named Rainsford, who washes up on a mysterious island where he falls captive to General Zaroff, a psychopathic man that preys on “the scum of the earth” simply for the thrill and excitement of the hunt. Connell builds suspense throughout the story through his use of dialogue and character behaviour. Richard Connell predominantly uses character interactions to build suspense as the plot progresses, utilizing dialogue to create a mysterious tone and to foreshadow the predicaments that Rainsford will soon find himself in. During the conversation between Whitney and Rainsford on the yacht, Whitney tells Rainsford that he felt an oddly distinct chill while sailing past the supposedly cursed island, even though "there was no breeze [and the] sea was as flat as a plate-glass window" (Connell 2).…
