She fought to hold the bagel she’d had for breakfast down as she observed the businessmen and women in their expensive clothes rush in and out of the offices. The atmosphere here was busy and fast paced. Discouraged, she second-guessed herself now as she hid behind her dark, long, wavy tresses and realized she didn’t belong here. The positive attitude that helped push her through the front door and make it to the receptionist was fading fast. Despite her reservations, she was determined to break out of her shell and prove to herself that she could handle the world beyond her comfort zone. Today, she thought, was as good a day as any.

One Perception Check Later A light rain comes to a stop as I walk up the slick driveway of my friend Aaron’s house. I push on the white, waterlogged, wooden fence gate to the backyard and stand just thirty feet from the open garage door. The backyard consists of two halves: the concrete path with a hutch housing rabbits and a grass yard with a brown, stone fire pit. A constant air of music plays from the wind chimes that hang from a vine-covered terrace separating the two areas.…

In the middle of my sophomore year, I was asked by a senior if I would like to be the president of a dance club they had started that year. The club members knew that I was apart of a well known dance studio. I was indecisive primarily because the club only had 3 members and so I did not know how I could make it into something starting off alone and young, but something told me to just go for it. And that I did.…

I managed to reach a point where I began making false promises to myself and others about addressing my situation. Among those empty promises was the one where I claimed I would give up drinking, attend rehab and try to get my life back on track. I even fiddled with the thought of seeking inpatient assistance if things weren't working as planned. Let's be clear and fair.…

Flaws: Internal and External The day I found my rash, I did not know it would be a life long struggle. I remember my family telling me that it was just a rash and that it would go away, it never did. It may not seem like a significant problem, but at 7 years old it was. This led me to see that everyone has their flaws, big or small.…

The time is now. I am back stage pacing back and forth trying not to panic. I am wearing tan khakis, with a blue buttoned up shirt with a light gray cardigan around my neck, I was dressed as Warner from Legally Blonde. Although the two haven’t spoken in months, it would be a lie for Katherine to say she didn’t think about James every day. For a long time, she didn’t think it was fair to miss him- after all, she was the one who had broken up with him- but she learned to swallow her pride and accept it anyway. She was an idiot for letting him go. It had just taken her too long to realize it; and even though James had agreed to meet with her today, the minute Katherine got into her car and started driving, she regretted her decision.…

It was the last time I walked out of the old, nostalgic building that I had called my school for most of my life; each step took me farther from the familiar, constant life I once had. I clearly recall that emotional day that caused several of my classmates along with myself great trouble; it was likely one the most momentous moments of my life. The other students had lightheartedly poured out of the school building to jump start their summer, their unavoidable return in the following months seeming distant to them. Unlike them, I was never coming back. I clutched the photo album my friends had made for me as a going off gift, and took a few seconds to look back at the school and let myself take in the details of it one last time.…
